Cybersecurity Awareness

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is a good time to make sure your online information is protected, as threats to technology and confidential data become more commonplace. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency highlights four things you can do this month to keep you safer online:

  • Think Before You Click: If a link looks a little off, think before you click on it. That includes links sent through email or a text message. It could be an attempt to get sensitive information or install malware.
  • Update Your Software: If you see a software update notification on your computer or mobile device, act promptly. If you can, turn on automatic updates.
  • Use Strong Passwords: Use passwords that are long, unique and randomly generated. Use a password manager, which will encrypt passwords to help better secure them. Avoid using the same password for multiple devices. Remember, you can often click 'Forgot Password' to reset your account if needed.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication: This will lead to an extra step in logging in, but the extra step can significantly reduce the risk of getting hacked.

October Family Events

There are several events coming up this month for you and your family to enjoy. While Halloween is a central theme in the coming weeks, there are other non-holiday specific activities taking place as well:

INDOOR GARAGE SALE:

The next garage sale will take place this Saturday, Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. through noon at the Lakeway Activity Center. It's a chance to check out some local items up for sale. Admission is free, but donations of non-perishable food items are accepted for area food banks.

WITCHES RIDE, ROLL & STROLL:

The second annual event kicks off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 down Lakeway Drive where families dressed in costumes will ride, roll and stroll their way from the Live Oak Golf Course to the Lakeway Activity Center throwing out candy to on-lookers. Whether you are in the 'parade' or just watching, join us at the Lakeway Activity Center afterwards for games, food and fun!

BAND OF THE HILLS CONCERT:

As part of the Arts in the Afternoon series, join the Lakeway Arts Committee at the Hurst Creek Sculpture Garden (104 Cross Creek) on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 4 - 5 p.m. for a free afternoon concert featuring "Band of the Hills." Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and snacks to this free event.

PUBLIC SAFETY DAY:

The annual event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. at Lake Travis Elementary School located at the intersection of RR 620 & Kollmeyer Drive. It's a chance to interact with area first responders, see some live demonstrations of emergency equipment they use, and listen to live music. There will also be plenty of children's activities. This is a FREE event for the public.

NOSFERATU 100-YEAR PERFORMANCE:

The Lake Travis High School Chamber Orchestra will once again present their annual concert favorite featuring the silent film "Nosferatu" with their live score of the film. It will take place at the Lakeway Activity Center on Saturday, Oct. 29 starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. This is the 100-year anniversary of the 1922 silent film, so expect some special treats, including a vampire costume contest and a chance to judge city staff pumpkin carving skills.
