Dearly beloved,

Pentecost…

Casting lots for a twelfth apostle
A Jewish festival attracting multitudes of foreigners to Jerusalem
A mighty wind and unquenched flames in a room of 12 believers
Spontaneously proclaiming good news in languages the speakers did not even know
The gospel understood by all, each hearing the good news in their own language
And the birthday of, the church universal. Alleluia!

Come and worship and rejoice this Sunday. Flame colored-attire optional. Other languages than English welcomed.* And a little birthday party afterwards. Hope you’ll be in our room.

Yours faithfully,
Claiborne Jones, Sabbatical Priest-in-Charge

*As you are able please bring a copy of the following text in a non-English language to read along with others from your seat. It will be Godly cacophony!

The Acts of the Apostles 2:2-4

And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

A bulletin insert will have the passage printed in Chinese, French, Greek, Irish, Italian, Somali, Spanish, and Ukrainian. You can also click the button below to print that insert at home:

Sometimes it can be hard to accept the invitation of Sabbath rest. Our culture places a high value on being productive and busy. When we stop to rest, we’re often composing checklists and to do lists in our head. It may be helpful to remember that taking Sabbath rest is not “doing nothing;” it is vital and life-giving action.

In addition to reframing our notion of rest as holy, developing rituals surrounding our Sabbath can be helpful. Prayer can be an excellent way to get ready, to prepare to cross the threshold from work to Sabbath rest.

Christine Valters Paintner, author, mystic, and online abbess at abbeyofthearts.com, has composed this wonderful prayer “Sabbath.” (Click HERE for a printable copy.)

God of holy rest,
on the seventh day you paused,
laying down the work of creation
and entered into sacred stillness.
Let us remember we were freed from slavery
in Egypt and you called us to be people of liberation.
Kindle in us the strength to say no
to a world of perpetual busyness.
Inspire us to set aside all of our plans
and goals to receive the lavish gift
of rest for ourselves.
Let the Sabbath be a time of profound renewal,
of intimate connection with You,
and a rekindling of our holy desires to be of service.
Sustain in us the desire to simply be
and not succumb to the demands
of productivity and an endless string of achievements.
Let our lives be a loving witness to a world
of restoration and refreshment,
of the profound goodness of joy and delight,
taking pleasure in the generous gift of pausing.

You may read the prayer silently or aloud to help set your intention to rest in God, or you may view this prayer as a video produced in collaboration with “The Work of the People” (www.theworkofthepeople.com). If you watch the video, notice how many images show people engaging all their senses in their activities of rest and recreation.

Wishing you blessed and holy rest this week.

The 12th Annual High Tea on May 14th
was a great success!

The 12th annual St. Bede’s High Tea held on May 14th was a welcome and special event. The parish hall was decked out and ready for a party; sweets and savories were delicious; silent auction and raffle items were in demand and a grand time was had by all.

The Tea was well attended (72 tickets sold despite the pandemic) and grossed $2,916.00. The proceeds will go toward renovating the Guild Room in the Mission Wing. This room provides workspace for the flower guild as well as other guilds.

Our many volunteers made for a successful High Tea. We thank volunteers who set up the parish hall; baked delectable sweets; made sandwiches; brewed tea; our men tea servers and cleanup crew. A special thanks to Nancy Ward and Connie Coralli for arranging the lovely centerpieces.

Thanks also to folks for their generous donations of items for the Silent Auction and Raffle. Last, but not least, thanks to everyone who attended. The Tea Committee is grateful for all the support.

Congratulations to all graduating Seniors!!!!

ESOL Celebration

The ESOL classes have officially stopped for summer break. Given our COVID restrictions (only fully vaccinated students and no children), we had a total of 18 students who worked very hard for 2 semesters, 15 students in person, and 3 by Zoom. We thank all the teachers who gave of their time and love. We especially want to thank Erica and Jelani Valdez who kept us organized. They even power washed the picnic tables so we could have our "graduation" celebration outside. They also organized the students and facilitated the transport of the teapot boxes and bins from the undercroft to the Parish Hall for the High Tea. Thank you Erica and Jelani!

EPISCOPAL RELIEF & DEVELOPMENT:
A WAY TO HELP THOSE SUFFERING IN UKRAINE?

As you may know, helping families fleeing violence has been at the heart of Episcopal Relief & Development's mission from the very beginning. In fact, we were established by The Episcopal Church to assist people fleeing Europe during World War II.

Today, we are counting on our faith communities to join us in helping our extended beloved Ukrainian family in need.

Thank you in advance for your compassion, and for praying for those affected by this conflict.

Yours faithfully,
Robert W. Radtke

FORWARD DAY BY DAY ON LINE

CLICK HERE for the daily meditations found in the Day By Day booklets
You can also find paper copies in the Connect Center in the Commons.

Forward Movement, a ministry of the Episcopal Church , grew out of the determination of the General Convention in 1934 to counter a period of anxiety, distrust, and decline in the Episcopal Church with a "forward movement" charged to "reinvigorate the life of the church and to rehabilitate its general, diocesan, and parochial work."

We are best known for the popular daily devotional Forward Day by Day, which provides daily meditations based on scripture readings appointed by the lectionary and Daily Office. Forward Day by Day is published in English, Spanish, large print, audio cassette, and Braille editions, and the daily meditation is available online.

The June selection is
Life or Death
by Michael Robotham

Why would a man serving a long prison sentence escape the day before he's due to be released? Audie Palmer has spent ten years in a Texas prison after pleading guilty to a robbery in which four people died and seven million dollars went missing. During that time he has suffered repeated beatings, stabbings and threats by inmates and guards, all desperate to answer the same question: where's the money?

On the day before Audie is due to be released, he suddenly vanishes. Now everybody is searching for him -- the police, FBI, gangsters and other powerful figures -- but Audie isn't running to save his own life. Instead, he's trying to save someone else's.

Michael Robotham has created the ultimate underdog hero, an honorable criminal shrouded in mystery and ready to lead readers on a remarkable chase.

If you are interested in receiving the Zoom link, please email Connie Coralli

Friend in Christ,

As violence escalates in Ukraine, over one million people have already fled the country — and the borders are flooded with many more people desperate to leave.

Almost all of them are women and children who have had to seek safety on their own, leaving their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons behind.

As this crisis continues to evolve, we are working with Anglican agencies and our other partners to provide humanitarian assistance, and urgently ask for your help.

Your emergency gift today will support our immediate response, providing cash, blankets, hygiene supplies and other needs as this crisis unfolds.

Our faith networks are currently on the ground in the border areas of Poland, Hungary and Romania, and we will continue to coordinate with them in order to help those who have been displaced. Specifically, our partner ACT Alliance is helping families on the Hungarian border, and our Anglican partners are mobilizing both an immediate and long-term response in Poland, Romania and Hungary.

Yours faithfully,
