Dearly Beloved,
As this is being written, Christians throughout of the world are observing the Feast of the Ascension, when Jesus left the earth. From the earliest days of Christian art, the image for the day is of Jesus' feet disappearing into a cloud. The Rev. Carrie Ballenger, Pastor of a Lutheran Church in Jerusalem, used such an image and words to reflect on the Ascension:

I love the idea that the last bit of Jesus the disciples saw,
before the Spirit arrived,
and before the birth of the Church,
was:
Dust from the roads of Galilee,
Dirt from consorting with sinners,
Callouses from standing with the oppressed,
Blisters from walking in the shoes of the poor,
And the holes:
Holes from the nails which held him on the cross,
Holes from which poured the blood of our salvation.
This Sunday our worship acknowledges the absence of Jesus, the Christ, and we will pray for God to send a Comforter (strengthener) whom we call the Holy Spirit. Some decades ago, churches would also remove the Easter paschal candle during the ten days, another way of acknowledging Christ's ascension.
Ten days from today, June 5, we will celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit. As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, with tongues of flame people from many nations were able to hear the good news in their own languages. You'll hear a few words in different languages in church. And It is a custom in some places for worshippers to wear flame-colored (red, yellow, orange) clothing. (Clergy garb is restricted but there's no rule about the color of shoes!)
And after the service we're outside invited for lemonade and cookies.
We have much to ponder, and much to celebrate.

It’s the time of year when many of us go on vacation, which people think of as a time of rest and relaxation. But sometimes vacations aren’t restful. For sure, I have sometimes tried to pack so much “doing” and “seeing” into my vacation, that I’ve returned exhausted and needing a vacation to recover from my vacation! So how does one truly take holy rest? How does one pause on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and longer basis to incorporate restful and restorative practices into one’s life?
During this time that our rector Chad is on sabbatical, I hope that we can all examine our practices of rest and perhaps explore new ones. I will be offering reflections and resources weekly in this space called “Rest is holy.” For this first installment, I’m going to direct you to The Episcopal Church’s Way of Love: Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life.
If you are not familiar with the Way of Love, it is not a program or curriculum as much as a rule of life, centered around 7 practices: Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, and Rest. When we incorporate these practices, which were modeled by Jesus, into our lives, we become better followers of Jesus. In fact, they help us to truly abide in Christ as Christ abides in us.
When you have time, be sure to check out all seven practices in the Way of Love, but for now, read what The Way of Love says about REST by clicking here. There is a wonderful 3-minute video that I recommend watching. The video says a lot of great things, but my biggest “takeaway” from it is that to fulfill the command to love others as we love ourselves, we must love ourselves first! And an important way we can love ourselves is to receive God’s gift of rest.

The 12th Annual High Tea on May 14th
was a great success!
The 12th annual St. Bede’s High Tea held on May 14th was a welcome and special event. The parish hall was decked out and ready for a party; sweets and savories were delicious; silent auction and raffle items were in demand and a grand time was had by all.
The Tea was well attended (72 tickets sold despite the pandemic) and grossed $2,916.00. The proceeds will go toward renovating the Guild Room in the Mission Wing. This room provides workspace for the flower guild as well as other guilds.
Our many volunteers made for a successful High Tea. We thank volunteers who set up the parish hall; baked delectable sweets; made sandwiches; brewed tea; our men tea servers and cleanup crew. A special thanks to Nancy Ward and Connie Coralli for arranging the lovely centerpieces.
Thanks also to folks for their generous donations of items for the Silent Auction and Raffle. Last, but not least, thanks to everyone who attended. The Tea Committee is grateful for all the support.

ESOL Celebration
The ESOL classes have officially stopped for summer break. Given our COVID restrictions (only fully vaccinated students and no children), we had a total of 18 students who worked very hard for 2 semesters, 15 students in person, and 3 by Zoom. We thank all the teachers who gave of their time and love. We especially want to thank Erica and Jelani Valdez who kept us organized. They even power washed the picnic tables so we could have our "graduation" celebration outside. They also organized the students and facilitated the transport of the teapot boxes and bins from the undercroft to the Parish Hall for the High Tea. Thank you Erica and Jelani!

Do You Have Documents to be Shredded?
Do you Want to Help St. Bede's at the same time?
If you need to dispose of personal documents, DeKalb County is hosting their annual Shredding Event on Saturday, June 11th from 8:00 AM until noon at the Sanitation Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive in Decatur. The event is free, but you must be a DeKalb resident, and the limit is 10 standard-sized boxes of documents per vehicle. St. Bede's has a number (4-6) of boxes that have been waiting for this event. To help transport them from St. Bede's, please contact Muriel Diguette at mdiguette@stbedes.org.

Forward Movement, a ministry of the Episcopal Church , grew out of the determination of the General Convention in 1934 to counter a period of anxiety, distrust, and decline in the Episcopal Church with a "forward movement" charged to "reinvigorate the life of the church and to rehabilitate its general, diocesan, and parochial work."
We are best known for the popular daily devotional Forward Day by Day, which provides daily meditations based on scripture readings appointed by the lectionary and Daily Office. Forward Day by Day is published in English, Spanish, large print, audio cassette, and Braille editions, and the daily meditation is available online.

The Gathering Going Forward Group continues to encourage all eligible St. Bede’s parishioners to get vaccinated and keep up-to-date with 3rd doses (for the immunocompromised) and boosters - which have now been authorized for all adults. We would love to be a parish that models Christ’s call to love our neighbors and the most vulnerable among us by being a community that is as fully vaccinated as it can be.

As violence escalates in Ukraine, over one million people have already fled the country — and the borders are flooded with many more people desperate to leave.
Almost all of them are women and children who have had to seek safety on their own, leaving their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons behind.
As this crisis continues to evolve, we are working with Anglican agencies and our other partners to provide humanitarian assistance, and urgently ask for your help.

Our faith networks are currently on the ground in the border areas of Poland, Hungary and Romania, and we will continue to coordinate with them in order to help those who have been displaced.
