The Pasta House

Finding the right treatment for relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) starts with asking the right questions:

  • What are the key factors of MS? What is the goal of an MS treatment?
  • How do I assess my MS?
  • How do treatments differ?
  • How do I know if my current treatment is doing enough?
Through a detailed look at the different factors of MS, MS. Jenifer Patterson, APRN will answer your questions to help you make the most of your fight against relapsing MS.

Navigating the Way!

March is MS Awareness Month

National MS Awareness Month is an effort to raise the public awareness of multiple sclerosis. Some facts you should know about MS:

  • Are you aware there are approximately 2,500,000 people around the world diagnosed with MS?
  • MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults.
  • Average age of diagnosis is between 20 - 40 years of age.
  • MS affects more women than men with a ratio of 2 men per 3 women
  • MS is a progressive disease which there is currently no cure.
  • Fatigue is the most common symptom of MS and the leading cause of disability.
  • MS is not contagious and does not affect your life expectancy.
  • Increased Awareness and Understanding of MS has led to (nine) 9 FDA approved treatments for multiple sclerosis. (The first therapy ever wasn't available until 1993!)

The goals of MS Awareness Month is to provide information, promote understanding and provide resources for those affected or interested in learning about MS.

Everyone wins when we face MS as a community!! Making others aware of your disease, keeping a positive attitude, helping others when you can, and accepting help when you need it, can change the face of MS. Navigators

An Opportunity with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville! picket-fence-home-sm.jpg

*Habitat is still looking for the perfect candidate!  If you feel you are that person, please give them a call!

In October of 2014, The Cain Center for the Disabled plans to sponsor a home through Habitat for Humanity.  That means that the Homebuyer would close on and move into their home in the early part of 2015.  The Cain Center sincerely hopes to find a homebuyer that will need and appreciate a home that is fully accessible-either for themselves or for their children.  By partnering with the Cain Center for the Disabled and Habitat, the homebuyer would join a very unique homeownership program that would build them a brand new, fully accessible home

Habitat is different from a bank or traditional home loan in that homebuyers earn "sweat" equity hours, at a minimum of 20 hours per month.  Hours can be earned by helping build homes, doing customer service in our ReStores, and by attending required classes, among other things.  Habitat has built homes with a number of disabled homebuyers and have found enriching "sweat" equity for each of them.

Habitat offers new (or rehab) homes with 20 or 25 year, ZERO percent interest loans.  The monthly payment usually averages $450-$550 per month.  In addition, there is a $1,700 down payment, which would be payable upon closing.  Habitat homes come with refrigerators and ranges, and they are all-electric, EnergyStar and extremely efficient homes, which keeps utility bills low.  Habitat builds primarily in the West End neighborhoods of Louisville, as well as Oldham County.

Habitat hopes to find this homebuyer as soon as possible! If you are interested in this opportunity, you can apply online at www.louisvillehabitat.org, or you can call Jaclyn Isaacs, Program Manager, direct at (502) 805-1401 to request an application by mail.  Please indicate "Cain Center" in the "Neighborhood Preference" box if you apply online.

Paula's fundraising efforts continue!

And we can help. Instead of discarding those empty printer cartridges and old cell phones, let's recycle them! The MS Center will receive all funds raised.

#1. Recycling cell phones: Turn in your old cell phones with their batteries (but no chargers or charging stations - just the phones).

#2. Ink & Toner Cartridges: Used printer ink and toner cartridges are collected. Only name brands can be recycled - no generic, compatible, re-manufactured, or office store replacement cartridges should be saved.

From Paula: "Both items can be dropped off at The MS Center or to me. As time goes on we can work out better logistics.

These will both be ongoing fundraisers, when I have a full box I will send it in and checks will be sent to The MS Center." Thanks, Paula!

This reminder is for you...

...if you will be turning 65 years of age in 2014, or are approved for SS disability this year.

Many states offer tax exemptions for homeowners if they fall into one of those two categories. If you qualify, this may reduce your tax liability by several hundred dollars this year. Some states also have an exemption for disabled veterans under the age of 65.

The laws differ in participating states and are very detailed. Look for the tax laws that apply in your state.

For local Jefferson County, KY residents, you can read about them  HERE

If you qualify, I hope this helps you  save a few dollars when your property tax comes due! Mike
