|
|
The application deadline for EMA's three Biennial Early Music Scholarships is Friday, April 9 at 11:59pm ET. This is a revised, extended deadline. Learn more and apply using the links below. Recipients will be announced in May.
-
Margriet Tindemans Early String Scholarship - Up to $25,000 to provide support for specialized, advanced study outside North America that focuses on some aspect of Medieval, Renaissance, or Baroque bowed stringed instruments.
-
Barbara Thornton Scholarship - $4,000 awarded to an outstanding and highly motivated (and possibly unconventional) young performer of medieval music who seeks to widen his/her experience through more advanced study and/or auditions in Europe.
-
Thomas Zajac Memorial Scholarship - $1,500 award to early music performers and scholars who wish to pursue specialized study in ethnic and/or folk traditions, instruments, or styles, for the purpose of exploring cultural cross-fertilizations in the history of early music and bringing that knowledge to bear in historically-grounded scholarship and performance.

The Newberry Consort Revives Music By 17th-Century Mexican Composer
|
|
by Kyle MacMillan
Sometimes the most exciting discoveries are waiting to be made right in your own backyard. That was certainly the case with the Newberry Consort, a nationally known early-music ensemble in Chicago, and the little-known music of 17th-century Mexican composer Juan de Lienas.

As we continue to confront violence and discrimination against Asian-Americans in a musical context, IDEA task force member Reggie Mobley was reminded of the following blog post written by tenor Nicholas Phan in July 2020. With Nicholas' permission, we are pleased to share it with the Early Music America community.

"Just Another Dumb Asian Singer"
by Nicholas Phan
|
I have a vivid memory of my parents taking me to see Midori perform at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, MI. I was about 9 years old, and a group of local Suzuki violin students went to see this prodigy, who had already catapulted to international fame by the time she was our age. When we saw her, she couldn’t have been more than 17. I was completely captivated by her mastery of the violin: a universe away from my clumsy half-hours of begrudging, required practice of the simplified classical tunes in my Suzuki violin book. I remember her playing the Beethoven concerto and wishing she would play the Tchaikovsky, my favorite. I also remember the white people around me criticizing her playing. They wondered aloud about the emotional and expressive depths of her artistry and more than one white concertgoer in my earshot described her playing as “robotic”.
