St. John's Episcopal Church - Centreville, VA

Parish News - July 16, 2025

To St. John's Parishioners and Friends:

Greetings from Shrine Mont Camp! I've spent the past few days exploring the many lives of the saints as part of All Saints Camp, where, in addition to the usual camp activities - the pool, camping, worship in the shrine, and more - campers "major" in athletics, visual arts, or music and theater. Each has its patron saint:

  • St. Sebastian, patron saint of sports, served in the Roman army and secretly helped persecuted Christians. He was eventually caught and sentenced to be shot full of arrows, which, for some reason, became a famous subject among painters. He miraculously survived this ordeal. A recovered Sebastian courageously returned to confront Diocletian and was then ordered clubbed to death for his faith.
  • St. Genesius was a Roman actor, performing in a play making fun of Christian baptism. Suddenly, he had a religious experience, perhaps some kind of vision, mid-performance, which resulted in his conversion. He refused to give up his newfound faith, despite the emperor Diocletian's demands (Diocletian again?). He was beheaded for his faith. (I keep telling the kids that these saints often meet gruesome ends.) He became patron saint of all kinds of performers, including actors, musicians, comedians, and magicians.
  • St. Catherine of Bologna, patron saint of artists, was a 15th-century Italian nun. She and other young women founded a community of Poor Clares. Catherine became famous for her writings (including Seven Spiritual Weapons Necessary for Spiritual Warfare), paintings (especially a portrait of St. Ursula), and illustrations (she illustrated her own breviary). She died of illness in 1463. No gruesome martyrdom here: in fact, her body was found not to have decayed and was declared "incorrupt." Her mummified remains can still be viewed today.

I tell the campers that we are all of us part of this great communion of saints. Whatever we're going through, we can always turn to the examples of the many thousands of faithful Christians who have come before for faith, encouragement, and inspiration. We are, all of us, God's holy ones, capable of far more than we think and loved far more than we know.

Faithfully,

Kevin

Register for Education for Ministry (EfM)

Are you looking to deepen your faith? Are you hoping to understand how your personal experiences and beliefs bring you closer to God and God's people? If "yes," EfM (Education for Ministry) may be for you.

Through study, prayer, worship, and reflection, EfM seminar groups journey together through scripture, church history, and theology. EfM is delivered through small seminar groups and meet for 36 weeks over a year. Participants in years 1 & 2 study the texts and context of scripture; Year 3 looks at Church History; Year 4 delves into Christian ethics and spirituality. Also built into the group is a fifth voice: Wide Angle, which offers a taste of each of the four years into one year.

Registration is open. Contact Walt Cooner to inquire about the upcoming EfM year at St. John's - where we have deep conversations about things that matter – always looking for ways God is active in our lives.
