Dear St. John's Parishioners and Friends:
Last Saturday, in the presence of the Holy Spirit, your Diocesan Clergy and Lay Representatives elected our new Bishop Elect, The Reverend Cannon Mark Stevenson. Our Old Testament reading this week is from Proverbs. The first two verses introduce us to “wisdom” saying “Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice?” and concludes with “and I (wisdom) was daily in his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race”. I have to believe wisdom was with us as we elected Canon Mark to be our next Bishop Diocesan and look forward to his spiritual and organizational leadership. Let's welcome and pray for Canon Mark, his family and our Diocese.
Let’s pray this prayer for the Diocese,
O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese to a goodly fellowship of faith. Bless our Bishop Elect Mark, our Suffragan Susan, and Jennifer, all priests and deacons and laity. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully administered and faithfully received. By your Spirit (wisdom), fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Peace,
Rev. Deacon Steve

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

St. John’s Wood Splitting Exercises Continue:
Saturday, June 4, 13 willing and able volunteers gathered behind St. Johns on Mt. Gilead Green. The weather was perfect. Yes, word is getting out and now wood is being donated to the parish, in addition the fallen trees we already had to cut up. We had two splitters going non-stop from 8:00 a.m. until Noon. Always good to announce that there were no casualties and just an occasional growl about a sore back😊 All in all, the count was about 2.5 cords of wood were split.
Several St. John’s parishioners were present: Dick Griffith, John Tucker, and Andrew Wade. Several other family members, friends, and neighbors also joined in the fun. We want to thank Jonathan Carvajal, Gene Crawford, Tony Denk, Steve Garifo, Dave Hess, Rob Quinn, Heiko Schröeder, Kathrin Schröeder, Andrew Vetsch, and Rick Vetsch.
We anticipate a similar event in late summer or early fall.

We have all seen the horrors of the war in Ukraine. If you would like to help those in need, Episcopal Relief and Development is working closely with a group that is on the ground in Ukraine. You can make a contribution on their website at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/ Please continue to keep the people of Ukraine in your prayers.
As the Russian invasion of Ukraine escalates, please continue to pray for all those involved in this conflict.
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

As a result of that resolution, gatherings will be held on Saturday, June 18 at four locations around the Diocese. At these gatherings, all churches can learn more about our shared diocesan ministries and how R-1 will affect financial pledges to the Diocese for the years 2023 and beyond. The Rev. Canon Mark Stevenson
Elected 14th Bishop Diocesan of the Diocese of Virginia
RICHMOND, VA (June 4, 2022) More than 450 lay and clerical delegates gathered June 4 at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Va. for a special convention to elect the 14th Bishop Diocesan of the Diocese of Virginia. The delegates elected the Rev. Canon Mark Stevenson on the second ballot (ballot details). The other nominees were:
-
The Rev. Joseph H. Hensley, Jr., Rector, St. George’s, Fredericksburg, VA
-
The Rev. Canon Alan C. James, Interim Canon Missioner, Diocese of Western Michigan
-
The Very Rev. Gideon L. K. Pollach, Rector, St. John’s Church, Cold Spring Harbor, NY
Prior to balloting, a motion was made on the floor of Convention to amend the rules of election to allow for a nomination from the floor of a petition candidate for whom a background check had been completed. This motion was defeated.
Following the completed election, Canon Stevenson joined the Convention remotely via Zoom to address the delegates. “You have honored me greatly. I am overwhelmed with deep joy over the journey that you have invited me to be a part of with you over the coming years," said Canon Stevenson. "There’s so much Gospel hunger, Gospel drive in Virginia. It’s simply awe inspiring.... My prayer today is that God will grant us joy-filled day after joy-filled day as we start this new journey with each other and with God.”
The Rev. Canon Stevenson is the Canon to the Presiding Bishop for Ministry Within The Episcopal Church. He is the principal liaison between Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and the House of Bishops, the various dioceses, and many of the governing bodies of The Episcopal Church.
Before being called to this role in September 2018, Canon Stevenson was the Director of Episcopal Migration Ministries, leading a dedicated team in executing a national program of refugee resettlement. Previously, he served as Domestic Poverty Missioner for The Episcopal Church.
Canon Stevenson served as Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of Louisiana from August 2005 until September 2013. Following hurricane Katrina, Canon Stevenson worked closely with local, regional, national, and international leaders and groups to put into place the processes for effective relief and other ministry. He was the Rector in two parishes: the Church of the Annunciation in New Orleans, and the Church of the Good Shepherd in Maitland, Florida. His time at both churches focused on developing ministries with youth and revitalizing ministries of stewardship, Christian education, and community outreach.
Canon Stevenson and his wife of 27 years, Joy, reside in Louisville, Kentucky, with their Border Collie, Franklin.
According to the Canons of The Episcopal Church, the majority of Bishops and Standing Committees of the 109 Episcopal dioceses must consent to this election. Pending the consent of the bishops and dioceses, Canon Stevenson will be ordained and consecrated a bishop in the Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 3, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at The Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, located at 4247 Creighton Road, Henrico, VA 23223.
Canon Stevenson will become the 14th Bishop Diocesan of the Diocese of Virginia. He succeeds the Rt. Rev. Shannon S. Johnston, who retired in 2018. The Rt. Rev. Susan E. Goff, Bishop Suffragan, has served as the Ecclesiastical Authority since Johnston’s retirement. Bishop Goff will retire at the end of this year.
About the Diocese of Virginia:
