St. John's Episcopal Church - Centreville, VA

Parish News - March 15, 2023

To St. John's Parishioners and Friends:

Blessings in this holy Lent! I'm still learning all the extraordinary goings-on here at St. John's. Be sure to mark your calendars, and read all the Enotes. Don't miss out on your share in what God is doing in this St. John's community!

Here are three items for you this week from the priest's office:

Listening in Lent (and Easter and always). Please sign up for a time to meet the new guy! I mentioned in last week's enotes that I'd be spending time listening in Lent. I'm setting aside two-hour slots in my calendar to meet with parishioners. There's no agenda, other than to getting to know you. Where we meet and for how long in that two hours is up to you. You can contact me via email or - I'm conducting a little experiment with this - click here to book a time directly.

Holy Week at St. John's. Our observance of a holy Lent concludes by walking the way of Jesus through the holiest week of the church year. We will wave our palms to hail our king on Palm Sunday. We will wash one another's feet as Jesus commanded on Maundy Thursday. We will kneel at the foot of the cross on Good Friday. Finally, we will celebrate the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Please mark your calendars for these Holy week services:

  • Palm Sunday, April 2, 9:30 AM
  • Maundy Thursday, April 6, 7:30 PM
  • Good Friday, April 7, Noon & 7:30 PM
  • Easter Sunday, April 9, 8:00 AM & 10:30 AM

Easter Egg Hunt! Following the 10:30 AM Easter Sunday service, we'll gather outside for our Easter Egg Hunt! Welcome family and friends, children of all ages, to the fun!

Please bring donations of candy (no peanuts, please) or small Easter-themed party favors (stickers, toys, etc.) to the church office, so our Easter bunnies and volunteers can be sure to have our eggs ready in advance.

Grace and peace,

Kevin

How to help Ukrainians If you would like to help those in need, Episcopal Relief and Development is working closely with a group that is on the ground in Ukraine. You can make a contribution: at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/

A Prayer for all those involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

(written by Archbishop Justin Welby and Archbishop Stephen Cottrell)

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 19, 2023

The First Reading: 1 Samuel 16: 1-13

God surprises his prophet Samuel by sending him to anoint the youngest son of a large family to be the new king. He protects Samuel in this work despite reasonable fear of death by King Saul.

The Psalm: 23 page 612, BCP

The Second Reading: Ephesians 5: 8-14

God has come into the world through the person of Jesus Christ, bringing light and redemption to every corner of the globe.

The Gospel: John 9: 1-41

Jesus stirs up trouble when he restores a blind man’s sight. Pharisees and the man’s own parents are skeptical and angry, while the now-seeing man is driven out of town, is found by Jesus, and becomes a disciple.

Masks are optional during the service
