St. John's Episcopal Church - Centreville, VA

Parish News - March 8, 2023

To St. John's Parishioners and Friends:

Thank you, St. John’s, for a festive welcome! March 5 was my first Sunday as priest-in-charge, and it was a joyous morning. I'm so excited to see what God has in store for this parish family.

I’m settling into the office this week. I brought a few items from home, including this driftwood Holy Family, a gift from my aunts upon ordination. I grew up in Virginia Beach and spent summers on the Outer Banks, so it's a special reminder of our brother Jesus, of my family, this parish family, the human family.

In that spirit of family, I'd like to spend this Lent (and Easter) simply meeting you and yours. Acting on some great advice from our bishop, I'm thinking of setting aside two-hour blocks to just talk--no agenda, just getting together. We might not meet for the whole time, but I could come to you, you could come to the church, or we could meet somewhere else. It would be up to you. I'd like to spend Lent listening. As I get a better sense of the rhythm of St. John's life, I'll create a schedule, and you can book a convenient time. Look for that in the next e-notes. See you Sunday, if not sooner!

Grace and peace,

Kevin

How to help Ukrainians If you would like to help those in need, Episcopal Relief and Development is working closely with a group that is on the ground in Ukraine. You can make a contribution: at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/

A Prayer for all those involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

The Third Sunday in Lent

March 12, 2023

The First Reading: Exodus 17:1-7

As the Israelites are led in freedom by Moses, they start to lose heart when the waters run dry. They quickly turn from trusting God’s provision to complaining to Moses that they will surely die.

The Psalm: 95 page 724, BCP

The Second Reading: Romans 5:1-11

Before we repented, Jesus died for our sins — his love hoping that we would accept the grace his death offers. So we, too, may find joy in suffering, knowing that trials mature and solidify the divine love in our hearts.

The Gospel: John 4:5-42

Pysanky, or Ukrainian Easter eggs, are a tradition passed down through generations of Ukrainians as a way to contemplate and express faith and community. To show support for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, Holy Cross will offer a series of workshops where participants could learn the art of Pysanky and contribute to the relief efforts of those affected by the war in Ukraine.

We will hold three (3) workshops during Lent this year. Suggested donation of $30 with 100% of funds donated go to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund Ukraine Crisis Response. Registration is required, please see the website and sign-up forms for more detail. For more information Click Here.
