Centreville Day is here!

The weather forecast isn't looking good, I'm told, so I need your prayers for sunshine this Saturday. The 31st annual Centreville Day will be held this Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10 AM to 4 PM right here in the Centreville Historic District. The day features a parade, safety expo, Eco Expo, cavalcade of pets, historic tours, entertainment, rides for the kids, amazing food vendors from all over, and more! Admission is absolutely free. Park in the neighborhood behind St. John's, or in the Carabba's parking lot to take a shuttle bus. Invite family and friends!

Some 3,000 people are expected over the course of the day, and, of course, St. John's will be here to welcome them all. Be sure to sign up to assist with Centreville Day, if you haven't already! Volunteers, expect emails with additional instructions and parking information.

Trunk or Treat, October 29, 5-7 PM

We'll host a trunk or treat on October 29. We'll gather in the front parking lot, decorate the trunks of our vehicles in spooky and silly decor or games, and we pass out candy and other goodies to the children in the community. Trunk-or-Treats are awesome fun: "houses" of candy all in one place, and you get a second chance to wear your costume! And it's good for St. John's, too. Halloween (All Hallows Eve) is a Christian holiday, a night to confront death and darkness - and laugh! For more information or to volunteer, contact Rev. Kevin.

Sign up here to commit to decorating your car, decorate a table, or assist behind the scenes. And help us spread some Halloween cheer by donating candy, party favors/toys, glowsticks, or stickers for the event. Drop off items at the church office or bring them Sunday morning.

God has a project, a great vineyard, and you're a part of it. But sometimes, we confuse our own ideas with God's ideas. We must learn to discern where God's hopes and ours find one another again: Jesus.

Upcoming Readings for October 15, 2023

Let us prepare our hearts and mind for worship with the readings for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 23A):

First Reading: Isaiah 25:1-9

The prophet Isaiah declares God’s power over the rich and the poor, and especially God’s compassion for those who are poor, oppressed, and neglected, rather than those who hoard for themselves.

Response: Psalm 23

The Lord is our shepherd, who loves and cares for us like no other. Psalm 23 is traditionally a funeral psalm, but it speaks as much of abundant life in this life as it does of the life enjoyed beyond.

Second Reading: Philippians 4:1-9

As Paul closes his letter to the Philippians, he exhorts them to marks of faithfulness and to love of one another for the sake of Christ.

Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14

Jesus’s parable cautions hearers to be receptive to God’s call immediately. It behooves us to prioritize God over other demands for our attention, affection, and devotion.

New Worship Customary

Bishop E. Mark Stephenson has updated liturgical guidelines for the Diocese of Virginia. Most of the rules are "behind-the-scenes," but one change concerns intinction (dipping the host or bread in the wine at Communion) and affects worship here at St. John's. Intinction is still permitted, but, out of hygienic caution and re-engagement with our Eucharistic theology, "individual communicants may not dip their own hosts or bread in the wine." The minister will intinct for you, if you so desire.

A Favor? Wagon?

I'd like to invite our youngest parishioners to participate in our Sunday offertory by bringing up the gifts. Does anyone happen to have a wagon that they'd be willing to donate to St. John's? You know, one of those toy wagons you dragged to the top of the hill, jumped into at the last minute, and tried to steer until you fell out on the concrete because you saw "Cool Runnings" and didn't own a bobsled? All Saints Sunday, November 5

The church celebrates the communion of saints, past, present, and future on All Saints:

• Honoring the Saints. All those we've loved and lost over the past year will be named in our prayers. The list is compiled from prayers for the departed over the last year. If there's someone you'd like to make sure is honored this All Saints, please email the parish office or just reply to this email.
• Blessing our Ministers. If you're in Education for Ministry (EfM), choir, altar guild, acolyte, lector, usher, or any other St. John's ministry, please be sure to attend this service for a special blessing and commissioning.

Tree of Life, Another Record!

Thanks to all who helped with last night's Tree of Life dinner in Sterling. We served 96 participants--another record!

St. John's partners with several other local churches to prepare and serve a meal to local residents every second Tuesday of the month at the Sterling Community Center. The Katharine K. Hanley Family Shelter

CIF provides immigrants in need with the means to improve their lives and become more integrated into the community, improve communication and cooperation among all groups serving immigrants, and build community recognition of our strength in diversity.

Prayers for the Holy Land

Many prayers have been offered in the wake of Saturday's terrorist attacks by Hamas and the outbreak of war. St. John's offered the collect for peace (BCP, p. 815) in our prayers of the people Sunday. This comes from Archbishop Hosam Naoum of the Episcopal Diocese in Jerusalem.

O God of all justice and peace we cry out to you in the midst of the pain and trauma of violence and fear which prevails in the Holy Land. Be with those who need you in these days of suffering; we pray for people of all faiths - Jews, Muslims and Christians and for all people of the land. While we pray to you, O Lord, for an end to violence and the establishment of peace, we also call for you to bring justice and equity to the peoples. Guide us into your kingdom where all people are treated with dignity and honour as your children for, to all of us, you are our Heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
