"Thy kingdom come..." - Matthew 6:10
A vestry member once told me about leaving her high-stress federal government job one night to make a vestry meeting on time. As she was leaving, a colleague asked where she was headed. She explained she had a meeting at church, that it was really important to her, and that she'd taken on this leadership role as a result. She didn't know how it was going to work out; she was new, but she was excited about the work ahead. The colleague never knew that she was faithful and, seeing how committed she was, wondered aloud about getting back to church themselves.
We're not all called to evangelize, much less convert, others, but we are all called to share. Here at St. John's, in this faith of ours, we know something different from what's out there. Something of God's kingdom - a kingdom of forgiveness, mercy, peace, justice, and love - can be seen and felt here (at least, we hope so). The time that we pray for - God's kingdom - has come, and it is still arriving. And we can't help but share something of what we've discovered of that kingdom with others.
Sometimes, all it takes is telling other people what's important to you. Just tell people you care about where you're headed and what's so different about it. Just tell a friend where you're going Sunday morning. Tell them about the dinner you serve on Tuesdays. Invite them along. Take a picture at worship and put it on social media. Tell a colleague why you're leaving early. Share the kingdom.
Faithfully,
Kevin

Upcoming Readings for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
First Reading: 2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15c
Naaman the Syrian learns humility and is healed by servants and Israelite outcasts. The prophet Elisha is instrumental in bringing Naaman to faith in the one true God.
Response: Psalm 111
Psalm 111 famously concludes, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." The path to wisdom begins in reverence of the Lord who is faithful and just.
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-15
Though preaching the gospel will almost definitely result in hardship, the Word is unabated.
Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
Being relieved of disease is not the only aspect of healing. By returning and acknowledging Jesus as the source of healing, only one of the lepers is fully restored..

Saint of the Week: William Tyndale
William Tyndale was famously a translator of the Bible into English. Tyndale's translations were the first English Scriptures to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts. His life's effort, however, was seen as threatening to the powers-that-be, and he was eventually executed in 1536.
Read more about him here.

Next Tuesday, we are serving Chili Mac and Corn Bread! Please help us if you can and sign up to feed our neighbors.
St. John's makes and serves a meal every second Tuesday of the month at the local family shelter. Sign up to prepare or provide food ahead of time and/or join us on October 14 to serve. Contact Deacon Steve for more information.
Bring donations for our local family shelter to church or drop by the office.

Support Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF)
CIF provides immigrants in need with the means to improve their lives and become more integrated into the community, improve communication and cooperation among all groups serving immigrants, and build community recognition of our strength in diversity.
If you're interested in supporting or volunteering with CIF's labor resource center and other work:
- Donate men’s work clothes and boots (they do not need to be new). Bring them to worship or to the St. John's office, or deliver them directly to CIF at 5944 Centreville Crest Ln, Centreville, VA 20121. Help the Shepherd's Center of Western Fairfax
St. John's has several volunteers supporting the Shepherd's Center of Western Fairfax. They provide rides to medical and therapy appointments and other important errands for people who are over 50 and can no longer drive. The Shepherd's Center needs additional drivers and support for local seniors. They've had to turn down a number of recent requests because of a lack of volunteers.
Volunteers do not have to commit ahead to a specific day of the week or time of day. As a driver, you check the Shepherd Center website for the client list, and select the ride you'd like to provide. All pickups are local, and all appointments are in northern Virginia (no DC or Maryland). You don't stay with the client in the doctor's office, if you don't want to. You can volunteer as much or as little as your schedule permits.
To assist, you must live in western Fairfax County in or around Clifton, Centreville, or Chantilly. For more information and to volunteer, visit the Shepherd's Center here.
