St. John's Episcopal Church - Centreville, VA

Parish News - September 17, 2025

To St. John's Parishioners and Friends:

In our baptismal vows, we promise, with God's help, to "proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ." As Episcopalians, we are called to preach by both our words and our deeds. For those of us to whom words come easily, we are called to back up those words with deeds of peace and justice. For those of us to whom works come more easily, we are encouraged to speak about the faith--and the One--who makes those deeds and this extraordinary life of love possible.

All of which is to say we are all of us called to preach the Gospel, each in our various ways. Preaching isn't just for clergy; it's the vocation of the entire Body of Christ. Preaching is for everyone.

So, over the coming months, in addition to Sunday sermons from me and Deacon Steve Busch, you will also hear from several St. John's parishioners. I hope you'll pray for them, listen to the Word as they have come to know it, and, if called, join them.

If you feel called to preach, or if you are just curious about what it might mean for you, please let me know. We'll meet to discuss lay preaching in the Episcopal Church, hopes and expectations, and, together, proclaim the Good News for all God's people.

Faithfully,

Kevin

Upcoming Readings for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

First Reading: Amos 8:4-7

There is a steep tax of destruction and darkness for those who insist on putting profit before love of God and neighbor.

Response: Psalm 113

In the third of three Hallelujah Psalms (Psalms 111-113), the Psalmist shouts for joy and calls for praise.

Second Reading: 1 Timothy 2:1-7

The key to faithful Christian life is prayer — individual, communal, intercessory, in admission, in praise and jubilation — at all times and in all circumstances, all through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Luke 16:1-13

Whatever skills and resources you have at your disposal ought to be used shrewdly. Jesus reveals the economics of the Kingdom of God: faithfulness in small things will bear fruit in larger ways.

New Worship Customary

Bishop E. Mark Stephenson has updated liturgical guidelines for the Diocese of Virginia. Remember: "individual communicants may not dip their own hosts or bread in the wine." The minister will intinct for you, if you so desire. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Rev. Kevin.

Help the Shepherd's Center of Western Fairfax

The Shepherd's Center needs additional drivers and support for local seniors. They've had to turn down a number of recent requests because of a lack of volunteers.
