Open Issues
Sunday, February 21, 2020
This Sunday we will watch all five performances of Brandon Leake (the amazing and first spoken word contestant on America's Got Talent and the winner of the last season). I didn't expect to like a 'spoken word' performance, but I was mesmerized - his talks are a lesson in social justice. Video about 15 minutes, discussion following each segment.
Join us via Zoom at 9:30 (you can join a few minutes early):

Covid-19 Community Outreach
February's Recipient: The Clearwater Free Clinic
The Social Justice Council recognized the great need for financial support to local non-profits during these difficult times). The selected non-profit will be the recipient of a monthlong collection of donations. Starting February 1st and for the entire month of February, the Clearwater Free Clinic will be the recipient.
Since 1977, The Clearwater Free Clinic has provided problem-oriented health care to low-income uninsured residents of upper Pinellas County by means of office visits, medications, lab work, x-rays, and specialty referrals. The Clinic, a volunteer driven non-profit, non-government medical facility, provides primary health care at no cost to those who do not qualify for government assistance and who cannot afford private medical care. With so many people losing their jobs and their health insurance, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the need will only grow. For more information go to www.clearwaterfreeclinic.org.
If you would like to help us with this effort, you may donate online:
Text Giving is also possible: (727) 500-2410
Be sure to choose "The Clearwater Free Clinic" from the drop-down menu.

SPIRITUAL POTPOURRI
February 19, 2021 @ 1:00 PM via Zoom
February 19 - This Friday we will have a guest speaker, lawyer Cynthia Hedge, in a session hosted by our Aryna Ryan to examine the characteristics of Servant Leadership and what it offers.
A brief description:
Robert Greenleaf, credited with coining the term, "servant-leader," defined servant leadership this way:
"The servant-leader is servant first... It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions... The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature."
Come join in this fascinating presentation and conversation.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Save the dates:
Friday: February 26 - Aryna Ryan's introduction to the course :The Artist's Way
Friday, March 5 - Rev Roberta's transition program " What Makes your Heart Sing"

A Care Circle Challenge Request
Ah, February…the month we commemorate love! Let’s show each other how much we respect and care about each other by maybe every couple of days letting a few people in our congregation know you’re thinking of them. Pick up the phone, send a text or email, or a handwritten note. Whatever the means, whatever the sentiment… it will warm your heart and certainly will make the recipients very happy!
"We'd said we'd keep in touch. But touch is not something you can keep; as soon as it's gone, it's gone. We should have said we'd keep in words, because they are all we can string between us…”
― David Levithan
If you need short term assistance from the UUC Care Circle for your injuries or illnesses, please contact co-chairs Susan Hegner or Eloise Hardman, or the UUC Office (727) 531-7704.

Notes (Continued) by Marcia Bailey from an incredible book:
“Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson
February 19, 2021
Deaths of despair, taking their lives slowly or quickly, is unique to the US. Political scientists called it a “dominant group status threat.” Status and opportunity started to improve in the 1960s for women, Blacks, and immigrants. That change left the White working class concerned that their skin and ascribed race were losing value. The equality of working class Whites with Blacks feels like a demotion to the Whites.
We also invite you to visit the Social Justice section of UUC's website ( https://www.uuc.org/social-justice) to read all of the recent works submitted by this dedicated group!
If you have any interest in authoring any other articles under the Social Justice umbrella, please reach out to Chris Mueller ( cem.hmm14@gmail.com) or Susan Allen (sallen915@aol.com).

New Legislative Advocacy Forming
The UUC Social Justice Council has approved a new advocacy group to work with UU Justice Florida during the Florida state legislative session. In years past UU Justice Florida has organized a trip to Tallahassee to meet with our legislators and discuss bills that support our UU values. This year because of the pandemic, this advocacy trip can’t occur. Therefore, it is more important than ever to email and call our state legislators about the bills they will be voting on before and during the legislative session which starts March 2, 2021. Bills are being heard in committee now. Step1 - Find out who is your state representative and state senator. Find out which committees they are on and find out their phone numbers and email addresses. Step2 - Join the UUC SJ Immediate Response Team on Facebook if you aren’t already a member or send an e-mail to Linda Stoller at lstol10403@aol.com to get legislative alerts
