Skateboard Policy
Parents and students, we do request your support with skateboards on campus. Please do not have students bring boards to school UNLESS they are using it to get to or from school. Skateboards must be stored during the school day and they are bulky. We understand the need for transportation, but if your child is dropped off and picked up from school, please keep skateboards at home to help us eliminate the need to store boards in classrooms and offices throughout the day. We appreciate your support.

5 Videos That Get Teens Thinking Critically About Media
|
Given the influence of media on our daily lives, it's important to give high schoolers opportunities to reflect on the media they encounter and create, and to think about how their actions online might affect others. Teens are ready to tackle complex digital citizenship topics like understanding online hate speech, how much screen time is too much, and ways to communicate with people who disagree with you. But working
digital citizenship lessons
into an already-packed daily schedule can be a challenge for most teachers.
For
Digital Citizenship Week 2019
, we've put together a series of quick video-discussion activities you can use to kick-start your commitment to digital citizenship. These can fit into a short, 15-minute window of time -- be it planned or unplanned. It's easy: Just show the video to your students, then use the questions to lead a class discussion. And if you find time to take it further, each video has a free lesson plan linked on the video page, complete with slides, students handouts, family activities, and more.

Bullying Stops Here
Bullying is any deliberate action that inflicts physical or psychological harm. The behavior must be unwanted, severe or pervasive, and interfere with access to education. Bullying includes verbal, physical, sexual, social and cyberbullying. Click on the link to find out steps to take when students and staff witness bullying.
When you witness bullying;
1. See Something, Say Something
2. Don’t join in the bullying behavior
3. Tell an adult
4. Stop the rumors
5. Be a kind friend.
Pirates must be vigilant against bullying behavior and it takes our collective effort to address it. Lastly, demonstrating kindness and respect for yourself, others and the world reduces incidents of bullying in our community. For more information, click on the link.

One of the ways support is provided for new teachers is getting support by teacher peers. National Board Certified Teachers Ms. Arciaga and Mr. Kurdyla and other staff members provide regularly scheduled workshops to go over instructional and operational workshops. This week Ms. G. Gonzalez and Sebastian provided mini trainings on how to use DonorsChoose.org and Schoology. The NBC Teachers provided Tips on Classroom Procedures, Schoolwide Procedures, expectations among others.
Facilitated by John Matich, 9th Grade Cohort Team met a second time to plan a collective approach to better support 9th grade students.
Ms. Napolitano and Ms. Wynn attended a Local District South Mastery Learning and Grading aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Professional Development led by Dr. Duenas!
Mastery Learning and Grading is a growth-mindset approach to K-12 teaching and learning, based on the expectation that everyone can learn when provided with the right conditions and support. It offers all students and teachers an alternative to traditional instruction and grading. By refocusing classroom grading, assessment, instruction, and lesson planning on clear learning targets, and by implementing research-based systems honoring individual variation in learning styles, Mastery Learning and Grading allows more students to succeed academically and ultimately to take charge of their own learning.
School staff had a professional development focusing on SBAC Specification questions. SBAC Specification questions are questions that are asked on State Standadized Tests, SATs, AP Tests among others. Having students experience these questions in all their classes help build their critical thinking and literacy skills which they can use in college, career and life.
