The Sacred Gift of Rest: Praying for Bishop Suarez and Embracing Renewal
In a world that feels more chaotic with every headline, it’s easy to get swept up in the endless demands of ministry and daily life. We give, we serve, we care for others—but how often do we pause to care for our own hearts? This month, Bishop Pedro Suarez begins his sabbatical, stepping away from the busyness of ministry to be still and wait upon the Lord.
Sabbatical is a reminder that rest is not a luxury; it is holy. It’s a time to lay down the work we carry so faithfully and allow God to carry us for a while. As Bishop Suarez enters this sacred season of renewal, let us surround him, and ourselves, with the following:
- To step back, breathe deeply, and let the noise fade
- To remember that God is still in control, even when life feels overwhelming
-
To be still and wait upon the Lord, knowing that God will renew our strength (Isaiah 40:31)
As we pray for Bishop, let’s also consider this: How often do we take time to pause? How often do we, as servants of the church, allow ourselves to be still in God’s presence amid the current chaos of our times?
Whether you’re a pastor, deacon, council member, choir director, or simply someone who loves their congregation, you’ve probably felt the pull of endless to-do lists and pressing needs. Yet Scripture reminds us, “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31). Rest isn’t just for the Bishop; it’s for all of us.
So, as we pray for Bishop Suarez, let’s also ask God to teach us the value of rest. Let’s encourage one another to step away—whether for a few hours, a day, or a longer sabbatical—so we, too, can be renewed by God’s grace.
Also, please lift up the synod staff during this time, especially Pastor Rob Rose, who takes on the role of Acting Bishop until Bishop Suarez’s return. Pray that God would bless them and guide them during this time.

Rescission of Sensitive Locations Policy
On behalf of AMMPARO and Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), we are sharing the following resource from the National Immigration Law Center.
The Factsheet: Trump Rescission of Sensitive Locations Policy outlines the impacts of this administration’s removal of “Protected Areas” from immigration enforcement (i.e. churches, schools, hospitals, etc.).
The document also outlines next steps and action items a congregation or organization can take to continue to support and protect immigrants in these formerly protected areas.
To stay up-to-date on resources available to support immigrant communities, we encourage monitoring the AMMPARO resource page for downloadable tools and information, and following and signing up for the ELCA’s advocacy alerts.
