LCC VBS and Day Camp Makes Community Connections
submitted by Kristen Hitchcock, Director of Student and Family Ministry, Lutheran Church of the Cross, St. Petersburg

Lutheran Church of the Cross, St. Petersburg, hosted ROAR VBS & VBS Day camp with Luther Springs the week of June 10-14. Our outreach project for the week involved collecting gently used clothes for Clothes to Kids. Clothes to Kids is an organization located in Clearwater, Tampa and St. Petersburg that provides new and quality used clothing to low-income or in crisis school-age children, free of charge.

Our children and youth brought in clothes, shoes and new socks and underwear for Clothes to Kids. Our middle school youth had the chance during the week to visit the St. Petersburg location. They spoke with the director, saw the store, learned about the organization and were taught how to sort the clothes they had been collecting. Throughout the week our youth sorted and labeled the clothes that were later dropped off at Clothes to Kids.
Our youth really enjoyed this experience, knowing they were helping other kids within their community. Some of our older youth are currently working on applying to become a regular volunteer for Clothes to Kids during the school year. We would also like to thank Thrivent Action Team. Because of this wonderful resource we were able to purchase lots of new socks and underwear for Clothes to Kids.
If you have a story to share about how your congregation is connecting with God, connecting with each other, or connecting with your community, send it to michellec@fbsynod.org. Stories should be no more than 300 words, and include at least 1 picture.
2018-2019 YAGMs Returning and Reflecting, 2019-2020 YAGMs Preparing

The three young adults from the Florida-Bahams Synod who have completed their year with the ELCA's Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) program are returning to their homes and preparing for the next step in their journey of life and faith. Please continue to pray for Stephen Bryant returning from Rwanda, Sean Bryant returning from Tanzania, and Courtney Noya returning from Mexico. The re-integration and reflection process for these young adults can be its own kind of challenge.

Two young adults are preparing to begin their year of service with YAGM. The Florida-Bahamas Synod Global Mission Committee will once again be supporting these young adults, and invites congregations throughout the synod to support them as well. YAGM participants need both prayer and financial support as they go out into their year of service. Macy Kennedy is from Christ Lutheran, Cape Coral and Katie Ziegelmaier is from Emmanuel, Naples. More information about these young adults will be shared over the next months.

The following statement on children in detention was issued by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and several other faith leaders in June.
