Dear Friends in Christ at English Lutheran Church,

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

In his letter to the believers in Philippi, Paul reminds us that even in times of uncertainty the peace of God will sustain us. As we say goodbye to Pastor Mark Kvale and move into a time of transition, let us rest in that promise of God’s peace and presence. As we say farewell to Pastor Kvale, we say thank you for his ministry at English Lutheran and pray for God’s blessing as he begins a new call in Boone, Iowa. We will honor Pastor Kvale for his service to our church on Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9. We invite you to be a part of this significant weekend for Pastor Mark and Ann.

Please know the Vision Board has already begun working with the La Crosse Area Synod to begin a discernment period for what’s next for English Lutheran Church. We are grateful for Pastor Becky Goche, our full-time Associate Pastor who has been very helpful in working with the Vision Board and the Synod Office in this time of transition. As of now, it appears we will be utilizing supply pastors and/or lay preachers for Saturday and Sunday worship services. There may be an Interim Pastor or Assistant Interim Pastor in the near future, but that will depend on availability of pastors, Synod Office input, and Vision Board consent.

In the coming weeks and months, the Vision Board will be working to assist the congregation in selecting a Call Committee as defined in the English Lutheran Constitution: six English Lutheran members elected by the congregation. We learned from the Synod Office that we will be able to move immediately towards a Call Committee. We will not need a Transition Team, as we have with previous call processes. We are hopeful this call process will be accomplished in a timely manner, led by the Holy Spirit. We appreciate your prayers for the Vision Board, ELC staff, and our congregation during this time of transition. More information will be forthcoming very soon as to how to recommend names of ELC members you believe may be willing to serve on a call committee.

On another note, we would like to call attention to the finances of our church and recent action taken by the Vision Board. Although giving to the General Fund has been comparable to previous years, our ministry and mission model has outpaced giving by $14,000 through the end of September. The Board has secured a line of credit with River Bank in the amount of $10,000 to be used for general operating costs if necessary. We are thankful for your generosity and blessed by your faithful stewardship. Please continue to support the ministry and mission of English Lutheran with your gifts and even prayerfully consider an extra gift before the end of the year. Please click here if you’d like to give online to the General Fund.

In Faithful Service,

Cara Hartfield, Vision Board President

God's Love Made Real, Commitment #3: Listening to and Amplifying Young Voices

The ELCA faces the critical challenge to engage younger generations who often feel overlooked in church settings. Research the Barna Group conducted to inform the work of God’s Love Made Real highlights this growing disconnect: At least half of ELCA laity believe their churches are not effectively prioritizing young people, making innovative approaches to youth engagement crucial.

“Young people are looking for what everybody is looking for, which is belonging,” explains Savanna Sullivan, program executive for youth with the Lutheran World Federation. Read more here.

English Lutheran is currently hiring for an Administrative Assistant and a Cook/Kitchen Coordinator. Click here for more information, or talk with Jennifer in the church office!

Farewell, Pastor Mark & Ann! On November 8 & 9, we give thanks and celebrate the Kvale's ministry with us here at English Lutheran Church, and send them off with prayers and well-wishes for their next adventure in Iowa! There is a basket in the narthex for cards and a reception will follow the Saturday evening service, as well as between services on Sunday. You may also mail cards to the church at 1509 King Street, La Crosse, WI 54601.

Please bring non-perishable food items to the grocery cart in the parking lot entry, or feel free to make a monetary donation in the church office, designated for one of our local food pantries!

About 700,000 people in Wisconsin will not receive their November SNAP (known as Foodshare in Wisconsin) benefits. Our Christian faith is filled with stories of feeding people. The feeding of the multitudes is the only miracle outside the resurrection that is present in all four Gospels. Whether it was 4,000 or 5,000 people (though there were probably also women and children who were not included in those numbers), we see Jesus devising ways for people to be fed. Even when his disciples suggested it was too difficult, Jesus knew the importance of nourishment and worked miracles, so people didn’t suffer. As we see multitudes of people in our community losing access to food benefits on top of already growing need, we are invited to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and get creative about feeding our neighbors. English Lutheran is again collecting fruit punch, green beans, and *jellied* cranberries for the La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Industrial size cans and gallons of juice are preferred. Please drop your donations off at the turkey in the narthex by November 23!

Donations to the October Food Collection went to Trinity Lutheran's "From the Heart Food Pantry." A total of 421 items were collected and delivered during the month. Thank you to all that donated food items. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated. During November, nonperishable food items will go to WAFER.  ~Ministry Council
