From the Front Office

Good day to you, Carlos Gilbert Elementary School Families,

This is your school counselor, Mr. Rick Fierro, back at it again with information about Carlos Gilbert’s attendance program. We love having our students at school. Your children make our jobs special. Through data, research and observation, we also know that children succeed at school when they are at school. They grow academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally everyday they are at school. Student stress and other emotional challenges can be associated with chronic absenteeism and our goal is to support that with our attendance team.

I want to share some information on New Mexico’s Attendance for Success Act. This Act provides schools in our state with guidance for prevention and intervention for chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is the case where students are missing up-to 20% of the school year or more. Both excused and unexcused absences are counted into the total of absences from school. Absences are expected to be communicated to the school secretary, Bernadette Cortez at bcortez@sfps.k12.nm.us or at 505-467-4703. If there are medical excuses, please provide her the information, so she can document your child’s absence. If you have communicated to your classroom teacher, that is excellent; however, SFPS asks you to always have the school secretary notified. Excused absences include: medical absence; death in family; religious instruction; tribal obligation; and an allowable excuse per Santa Fe Public Schools District Policy such as a school sponsored activity.

Attention to Attendance letters are automatically generated at 4 days, 7 days and 12 days absent for both excused and unexcused absences. If you received a letter and have communicated the absences, it is a good idea to reach out to me, the school counselor at rfierro@sfps.k12.nm.us, so that I can document any barriers affecting your child’s attendance. Communication can support us in understanding your family’s situation. When in doubt, call or email the school, or myself and we can work through it. At the end of the day, we love having our students at school. Your children make our jobs special.

CGE School Counselor,

Rick Fierro

There will be more information to come but I wanted to let those that are not familiar with our PTK and Halloween event the importance of this fundraiser.

Carlos Gilbert PTK strives to be one of the leading public schools PTK organizations in supporting our amazing principal, wonderful teachers and staff and most importantly our KIDS! The money we raise comes solely from our annual Halloween Carnival which is why it is so important. The money we raise as a community helps: provide teacher reimbursements of up to $700 to each teacher grade level enrichment programming for each grade special funding requests from teachers provide reimbursements of $300 for each of our school clubs and teams before-school care that is not covered by the district school events such as our valentine's dance our holiday giving tree

our teacher and staff appreciation luncheon and hospitality carts. If you want to know more about what we are raising money for, please reach out to me or come to a PTK meeting to hear about all the wonderful things our school PTK is doing.
