October is Bullying Prevention Month
Greetings from your school counselor, Mr. Fierro,
October is national Bullying Prevention month. As you may know, bullying prevention is a top priority for the entire Santa Fe Public School District. Bullying prevention is one of two curricula I teach to our students. The model we use to teach the students is the Three R’s: Recognizing; Reporting; and Refusing bullying behaviors. Recognize works with the students increasing their understanding and practice for observing bullying behaviors and their emotional and perceptual responses to the experience. Report works with the students to help them understand the difference between tattling and reporting a situation that has hurt them in physical, emotional or social contexts. Refuse teaches students how to say words that mean “no” and to stand up to others in a strong and respectful manner. The students also learn about other situations, like cyberbullying or online bullying, where media devices are used for bullying behaviors. Cyberbullying or online bullying lessons happen in 4th grade and higher. The curriculum will be rolled out throughout the month. I hope that our families, our students and our staff all have a wonderful month. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Rick Fierro, MA
