Reflections with Fr. Mark
|
|
Our faith journey is all about relationship. We are called to be in relationship with our God and with one another. At times, there are circumstances or choices that challenge and strain these relationships. However, we are encouraged to be imitators of Christ. Read more...

A Message from Our Music Ministry
Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is indeed with great joy that we return to public worship as we continue “on the journey” toward the end of this Pandemic. But as we know, many aspects are not the same and our music is no exception. For the public celebration of Sunday Mass at 8:30 am and 10:30 am, in accordance with the guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, our repertoire of music will not be including many of the hymns and service music that would normally be conducive to our Parish tradition of strong congregational singing.
However, we will be featuring more of a meditative repertoire, which we all would like to heartily encourage you to “sing in your heart” and to actively participate by actively listening. As we know, Music in the Liturgy is not just a functional “tradition,” but a very real part of our experience in joining together as community in our common worship of God.
For the virtual Sunday Mass, we will be sticking with the more familiar repertoire and wherein we would also encourage you to sing out to your heart’s content as is safe for your household!
The Lightshine Choir continually hosts our weekly Bible Study on Zoom on Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 pm, where we join in common reading, prayer and discussion on the readings for each upcoming weekend. Please e-mail Justin Senneff, choir director, at senneffj@yahoo.com for more information.

'Drive-thru' Confessions
'Drive-thru' Confessions are offered at 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Please wear a mask and drive through the church parking lot where you will be directed through the back alley to approach one of the priests who will hear your brief confession from outside the passenger side of the car.
If there are multiple people in the car, the passenger/s may exit and stand at a safe distance and we will come to them after hearing the driver’s confession. This is not a prolonged counseling moment: we want anybody who wants a brief confession following these months of lockdown to have the opportunity, so please be prepared and expedient. Please drive out safely through the rear gate onto Live Oak Avenue. Confessions may not be held on inclement weather days.

Pray for an End to Abortion – February 17 through March 28
In just a few days, on February 17, we enter the holy season of Lent and a record 40 Days for Life spring campaign kicks off in 567 cities (an increase of 60 cities from last spring). 2020 saw the election of the most pro-abortion government in U.S. history. The pro-life response this year has been unprecedented.
The crisis of abortion is enormous. A tragedy of epidemic proportions, abortion is the leading cause of death in the world, taking an estimated 40 million innocent lives every year. And equally tragic is the number of people who endorse and support abortion. This sobering news should move us to pray, fast and witness.
Twice a year, 40 Days for Life (https://40daysforlife.com/) uses a peaceful approach of prayer, fasting, vigil and community outreach to change hearts and minds. Nationwide and beyond, the campaign has witnessed 18,012 babies saved, 211 abortion workers quit, and 107 abortion centers closed and many repented victims.
The defense of the unborn is ultimately a spiritual battle. The devil does so much to try to distract us away from the One we serve -- Jesus Christ. Christ told us some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. These two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God’s will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God’s help. Knowing that “with God, all things are possible,” people of faith and conscience unite in 40 days of prayer and fasting.
Are you looking for ways to pray or fast more during Lent? Consider participating in our local Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign starting on February 17. We invite you to join with others from St. Luke and neighboring parishes to peacefully pray (wearing a mask and socially distanced) in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood El Monte, at 4786 N. Peck Road, El Monte (corner of Peck and Lower Azusa) between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm during the 40-day vigil.
If you hesitate to pray in front of Planned Parenthood because you think you will be approached by people or expected to do sidewalk counseling, rest assured that at this location you will not talk with anyone. You only stand or sit, and pray.
"Rend your heart and not your garments.
Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate." -Joel 2:13
Help save lives by praying for an end to abortion February 17 – March 28!
