Reflections with Fr. Mark

Today, we continue our faith journey with exorcisms and healings. Jesus restores the health of Simon Peter’s mother-in-law and helps her up. Notwithstanding all the “mother-in-law” jokes, I always wondered if Peter was grateful on this day! LOL! Read more...

A Message from Our Music Ministry
Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is indeed with great joy that we return to public worship as we continue “on the journey” toward the end of this Pandemic. But as we know, many aspects are not the same and our music is no exception. For the public celebration of Sunday Mass at 8:30 am and 10:30 am, in accordance with the guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, our repertoire of music will not be including many of the hymns and service music that would normally be conducive to our Parish tradition of strong congregational singing.
However, we will be featuring more of a meditative repertoire, which we all would like to heartily encourage you to “sing in your heart” and to actively participate by actively listening. As we know, Music in the Liturgy is not just a functional “tradition,” but a very real part of our experience in joining together as community in our common worship of God.
For the virtual Sunday Mass, we will be sticking with the more familiar repertoire and wherein we would also encourage you to sing out to your heart’s content as is safe for your household!
The Lightshine Choir continually hosts our weekly Bible Study on Zoom on Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 pm, where we join in common reading, prayer and discussion on the readings for each upcoming weekend. Please e-mail Justin Senneff, choir director, at senneffj@yahoo.com for more information.

'Drive-thru' Confessions
'Drive-thru' Confessions are offered at 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Please wear a mask and drive through the church parking lot where you will be directed through the back alley to approach one of the priests who will hear your brief confession from outside the passenger side of the car.
If there are multiple people in the car, the passenger/s may exit and stand at a safe distance and we will come to them after hearing the driver’s confession. International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking
February 8 marks both the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita and the Catholic Church’s International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking.
St. Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of trafficking victims, was kidnapped by Arab slave traders in Sudan when she was only nine years old. Josephine suffered years of brutal beatings and even torture and yet, when she finally gained her freedom and became a Catholic nun, she was known for her light-hearted spirit, ready smile, and unceasing prayer. She said, “With God in our heart, we can bear all things.”
Even before Josephine learned of Christianity, she said, “Seeing the sun, the moon, and the stars I said to myself, ‘Who could be the Master of these beautiful things?’ I felt a great desire to see him, to know him, and to pay him homage.” St. Pope John Paul II said that, “Josephine Bakhita’s life points to the victory of God’s love over the ravages of sin and evil.”
Sadly, there are an estimated 40 million people being trafficked in the world today – more than at any time in history. Pope Francis has called for an end to this modern-day slavery and is asking Catholics to pray for the intercession of St. Bakhita.
Please join us in praying:
“St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into slavery as a child and endured untold hardship and suffering. Once liberated from your physical enslavement, you found true redemption in your encounter with Christ and His Church.
O St. Bakhita, assist all those who are trapped in a state of slavery;
Intercede with God on their behalf so that they will be released from
their chains of captivity.
Those whom man enslaves let God set free. Provide comfort to survivors of slavery and let them look to you as an example of hope and faith. Help all survivors find healing from their wounds. We ask for your prayers and intercessions for those enslaved among us. Amen.”
To learn what the Archdiocese of Los Angeles says we as Catholics can do to end human trafficking visit https://lacatholics.org/human-trafficking/. If you or someone you know is a victim of human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or Text: 233733.
“St. Josephine BaKhita, pray for us!”

During these 40 days, you are invited to pray and fast for an end to abortion. We also ask you to consider joining with others from St. Luke and neighboring parishes to peacefully pray (wearing a mask and socially distanced) in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood El Monte, at 4786 N. Peck Rd. (corner of Peck and Lower Azusa) during the 40-day vigil.
Our group needs your help! To volunteer, please contact our area’s 40 Days for Life coordinator, Glendy, at (626) 756-6934 or by e-mail at latinaglendy@gmail.com. For more information, or if you have a question, please e-mail stlukesjc@gmail.com or leave a message for Wendy at (626) 442-9862.

Coronavirus Vaccine Resources for Catholics
The Vatican’s doctrinal office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), has determined that it is “morally acceptable” for Catholics to take
these vaccines against the COVID-19 Virus. This judgment is deeply rooted in the Catholic moral tradition.
On December 21, 2020, the CDF stated: “All vaccinations recognized as clinically safe and effective can be used in good conscience with the certain knowledge that the use of such vaccines does not constitute formal cooperation with the abortion from which the cells used in production of the vaccines derive” … “the morality of vaccination depends not only on the duty to protect one's own health, but also on the duty to pursue the common good.” “In the absence of other means to stop or even prevent the epidemic, the common good may recommend vaccination, especially to protect the weakest and most exposed.”
Thus, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles strongly encourages Catholics to receive a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine for the sake of ourselves, our loved ones, and the common good.
If some of the faithful choose not to take the vaccine for reasons of conscience, the Vatican says those persons “must do their utmost to avoid … becoming vehicles for the transmission of the infectious agent.” Read more...
