From the Rector Desk:
Near the first of every month Fr. Peter offers a topical reflection for our readers, so look for his next correspondence in an upcoming issue here.

Vestry Vibe
By Sarah Belisle, Vestry Worship Liaison
The commission for worship encompasses many committees here at St. Christopher's. These committees include the Altar Guild, the Flower Guild, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, Intercessors, Communion Bread Bakers, Acolytes, Greeters, Ushers, Lectors, the Banner Committee, Pastoral Assistance Team, Chapel Prayer Team, and Music Ministry.

My role as Worship Liaison is to periodically bring the chairs for all these committees, along with Fr. Peter, together for meetings to plan for the liturgical year. I also oversee the budget for worship. The Flower Guild is funded independently, but the rest of the committees' budgets fall under worship. Most of this small budget ($3100 for this year) is spent on a quarterly tuning of the organ, which runs more than $500 each time. The rest goes toward keeping the piano tuned, sheet music, and supplies for the Altar Guild and Chapel Prayer Team.

Some of the highlights of our worship year include the special services at Christmas and Easter, with gorgeous floral arrangements and beautiful music. Other highlights also include the Agape Meal on Maundy Thursday and our Youth Sunday, which this year saw the joyful participation of children of all ages.

If you feel called to serve on any of these committees, please contact me (703) 992-8162 . You may also find printed information about these committees on the table just inside the church door.

Did You Know?
Creighton Dunlap wowed not only the youth but also the adults with her children's sermon, last Sunday, July 2.

Book Discussion Group Meeting
The Book Discussion Group will meet at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 18th, at the home of Judy Lawson to discuss Jodi Picoult's Small Great Things. Again Picoult presents a moral dilemma, this time involving white supremacist parents and an African American nurse. Everyone is welcome. RSVP to Judy or Christine Meloni.

ECHO Garden Update
We're having a great summer garden so far, as more vegetables were planted earlier and harvesting started earlier than previous years.  We've harvested nearly 80 pounds so far, with the bulk of that, in weight, the zucchinis. Radishes and carrots look, and taste, very good; and we've harvested the first of the tomatoes. There are 4 kinds of tomatoes, including one heirloom, with all doing very well. The border on the Hanover side of the garden looks especially pretty with all the marigolds planted by the Children's Church. If you have any questions, please contact Marifran Bustion, 703-455-0878  or [email protected]

FREE SCHOOL PHYSICALS COMING August 5
By Lynn Knox
This outreach ministry is coming soon and you can be a part of it in many different ways and times. This will be the 17th year we have worked together to provide the needed school physical examinations to uninsured preschool through 6th grade children who will enter our county schools for the first time. Through your generosity we will be able to give each one a backpack of school supplies and also distribute school supplies to ECHO, Garfield, Crestwood and Lynbrook schools and two local family centers.

Combining the Springfield and the South County Physicals, this year the examinations will be held at the South County Health Department Offices in the Fairfax County Government Center on Richmond Highway in Alexandria. Children will receive dental and vision screening and other services not available at the smaller Springfield location.

When and how can you volunteer?

Preschool News:
Occasionally our preschool outreach has some special news, a teacher to introduce, or other tidbit to share. Fr. Peter encourages you to watch this space in future issues of the E-pistle for those times when such news comes forth!
