SOLAR ECLIPSEeclipse
As you may know, we will experience a solar  eclipse  event on Monday, August 21 st .   At approximately 2:35PM that day the Atlanta Metro area will experience a 98% solar  eclipse  event.   We are very excited about this once in a lifetime experience.  Instructionally, there are some very exciting opportunities that we can utilize as a school community and we are looking forward to sharing them with our students.

Fulton County Schools communicated information to parents earlier this month regarding the eclipse and how this will impact the school day. The school day will be extended and dismissal for high schools will begin approximately 15 to 45 minutes after the normal 3:30PM dismissal time. The decision to extend the day is for student safety, since the eclipse will take place during or close to our elementary school dismissal time.

The district has approved absences on Monday, August 21 as excused. Also, parents wishing to check students out early will also be excused.  If your family chooses to view the Solar  Eclipse  together, any student check out or absence on August 21 st  will be marked excused.   If you are checking a student out of our building, please try to do so before noon.

Please know that our school is preparing related educational activities for the day. We will be providing permission slips for viewing the solar eclipse through your student's 6th period class by the middle of the week. A more detailed plan for the day will be emailed to you and posted on our website by Wednesday this week.

Also, because the district requires an 1:8 student to adult ratio, we may also need volunteers to help use monitor the event on the 21st. So please keep an eye out for the email communication that will come from Milton regarding this event.

Thank you and we are looking forward to giving our students an opportunity to experience this event as safely as possible!

STUDENT DROP OFF PROCEDURE!DROPOFF
THANK YOU to all our parents/guardians who adapted to the NEW drop-off process this past week. We will look to improve the process with some better traffic markers during the drop-off window. Please read the bullets below to help the process flow a bit better.
  • The heaviest amount of traffic occurs between 7:45AM and 8:10AM - please plan your arrival accordingly.
  • All vehicles must enter through the same entrance near the front of the school.  When entering we ask that drop-offs stay to the right and students who are parking stay to the left.
  • Please pull ALL the way up to the DESIGNATED STUDENT DROP-OFF AREA. This will ensure that traffic continues to flow into the lot.
  • After dropping off please exit through the last row of the parking lot.
  • Left turns WILL BE ALLOWED when exiting the lot. (Please note the map below does not reflect that change - LEFT TURNS ARE ALLOWED)

ATHLETICS
CROSS COUNTRY
The Eagle cross country teams opened up their 2017 season with the annual time trial race on Milton's very difficult home course but saw the overall course record substantially broken and help set the varsity & JV squads for the team's first meet later this month.

GIRLS
The Lady Eagles time trial race was a very competitive affair that saw the first 6 girls finish within 59 seconds. Leading the charge was sophomore Abby Rindt (1st-21:48) who led from the start and was never seriously challenged. Junior Taylor Cushman (2nd-22:14) followed and led a tight group of finishers that included seniors Annie Gallagher (3rd-22:31) & Jessie Barnes (4th-22:36), along with junior Faith Wagner (5th-22:39) & senior captain Emily Bowers (6th-22:47). Over 100 finishers were recorded.

BOYS
History was made on the Eagle home course as defending state champion senior Sam Bowers (1st-16:39) pulled away from early leader senior Nicholas Yanek (2nd-16:46) just after the 4 kilometer mark to set the all-time best performance ever at the state's most difficult venue.  Yanek's performance is now the 2nd best ever on the course as the previous course record was 17:07 (Bowers, 2016). Bowers, who is also the defending state 3200 meter track champion, was presented his state championship rings during the team's award ceremony following the races.  Senior Michael Malkowski (3rd-17:28) led a string of seniors to the finish line with Ryan Beitzell (4th-17:37) & Dru Milton (5th-17:41). Dru Milton's finish time now puts him 7th all-time among Milton runners on the home course.  There were close to 100 finishers in the boy's race.

Next up for the Milton High School cross country teams is the Zack Wansley Cross Country Clash at Clinton Farms Park in Douglasville, GA on Saturday, August 19th.
