EAGLE WEEKLY
SMA HIGH SCHOOL
FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear SMA Family and Friends,

In honor of the tradition of giving thanks during this season, I would like to express a heartfelt Thank You to SMA families and parents, the SMA Faculty and Staff, and most importantly the amazing SMA Cadets for the warm welcome that my family and I have received in our life move to the Sarasota area and SMA in particular. I am truly honored to be the Head of School of an organization that is so positively represented by the amazing cadets, and so well led by this incredible and talented Staff and Faculty.

There have been some incredible accomplishments this school year thanks to the efforts of the staff, faculty, and the cadets. In the words of our Executive Director, we have “momentum”! Let’s keep that momentum going as we approach the end of the first semester and prepare for our Local End Of Course (LEOC) and End Of Course (EOC) assessments. Please encourage the cadets and reinforce that the faculty has set them up for success, and this is their time to shine!

Please take some time in this next week to give thanks for the opportunity to be a part of an organization that has a mission focused on giving our cadets the tools they need to be successful throughout life, as we give thanks to you for trusting us with this ever important role of molding your children into the leaders that they all have the potential to be.

Respectfully,

SMA-LTC Frederick T. Fout
Head of School

ANTHONY BARROSO

What an honor it is to have Anthony Barroso as our Regimental Commander. Not only does he shine at SMA, but on November 13th, Anthony received the Youth Philanthropic Award at the Annual Philanthropy Luncheon. We are so proud of you!

“If you feel worried for the future of the world, you should know about Jonathan Barroso. A senior at Sarasota Military Academy, musician, young philanthropist, academic achiever, and founder of a UnidosNow high school club, Jonathan is and will be kind of the leader who pulls us together with ideals that are important to our country. Loved to see him recognized at  #NationalPhilanthropyDay . Great job, Association of Fundraising Professionals, SW Florida Chapter and nominator Community Foundation of Sarasota County.” ~ Susie Bowie, Executive Director,  Manatee Community Foundation

SPOTLIGHT ON FIELD TRIPS

The ALAS field trip to Sarasota Courthouse and Sarasota County Jail:
During the tour, SMA Cadets had the opportunity to watch a Dependency case with Judge Rochelle Curley and they spoke with an Official Court Reporter who showed them how to operate a stenography machine. Deputy Duffy, which is Cadet Megan Duffy’s mother, conducted the tour at the courthouse premises, and Colonel Hoffman along with Captain Scott, conducted the tour at the jail. It was a unique opportunity for the SMA cadets!
We the People:
US History students went on a field trip with SMA-CPT Vanston to see  a musical called  We the People  at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.  Students had a blast learning about the three branches of government, the First Amendment, presidential elections, democracy, and the judicial process. On the way back, they stopped in to the Art Center and got the chance to meet a visiting artist from Brussels and learn about her work. What a great day of fun and inspirational and cross-curricular learning at SMA!
Marine Science trip to USF:
SMA-CPT Marks' cadets toured four laboratories on the campus and a 100' research vessel. Thanks to all who made this possible!
Chinese class trip:
Cadets ordered their food and drinks in Chinese at the Yummy House!
