EAGLE WEEKLY
SMA HIGH SCHOOL
FROM ADMINISTRATION

SMA Friends and Families,

It almost seems a daily occurrence that something is reported in the news that poses yet another threat to our children, our communities, and our way of life. Most recently, an attack of our precious youth has been popping up on social media sites in the guise frightening but interesting creature called MOMO. This online apparition attempts to lead our children toward a dangerous path making them think it is a simple game, encouraging kids to run away from home, hurt themselves or commit suicide. This challenge is putting them at danger of being exploited, trafficked, or worse. This is just one example of the many negative factors of media influence, others include the direct marketing to youth of flavored e-cigarettes/JUUL and CBD products that are a proven addictive products with proven negative health and medical implications. More directly, our youth are constantly bombarded with examples of negative behaviors through social media, as well as the occasional cry for help by someone in need of professional mental health assistance. In addition to these, just the media reporting and seeming glorification of conflicts based on hate due to race, religion, gender/sexual orientation, politics and other societal concerns has a very negative impact on our youth during a time in their lives critical to the development of lifelong values and beliefs. NEXT WEEK

The International Heritage Week begins on Monday, March 11th and cadets will receive tickets during their first period class. Each day they may redeem their tickets, during lunch, for the refreshments of the heritage being celebrated that day.

Monday, March 11th:
We will begin with a celebration of Chinese culture and heritage. During lunch, from 10:35-11:00, under the blue awning, there will be tables with typical Chinese refreshments. Chinese music will be played on the speakers. Cadets will be invited to write a wish on a red ribbon which will be placed on a "Wishing Tree." They will need to present a ticket to write a wish. Only one wish per student.

Tuesday, March 12th:
SMA Faculty & Staff will prepare their favorite heritage foods. Cadets will have tickets to redeem for samples from tables of their choice. Various traditional songs will be played on speakers.

Wednesday, March 13th:
We will celebrate Hispanic/Latino heritage. Renisito, a local Cuban performer, will be here to perform during lunch under the blue awning. In the morning, he will be visiting our music students to talk about his craft and culture.

Thursday, March 14th:
We will culminate on Thursday, with reading wishes from the "Wishing Tree" during formation.
SMA IB TEAM

SMA Odyssey of the Mind IB team won first place at the regional competition! They're moving on to the Florida State Competition on April 6th at UCF. Team members are Aeryn Sachs, Roasana Viera, Emily Watrobsky, Lily Dunn, Jacob Mann, and Kamil Kusznierewicz.
WRESTLING NEWS

We could not be more proud of our Wrestling Team and Coaches! Last Saturday, Coach Arrington and Coach Browning had 9 wrestlers competing for a Regional Championship with schools twice our population size. We resulted as Regional Runner Up and are sending 5 wrestlers to States at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, FL this weekend!

  • Sean Cervin and Nico Gyorgy were champions in their weight class.
  • Garret Murphy and Mason Marchbank placed third.
  • Erik Borresen placed fourth.

For the first time in SMA history,
our team placed SECOND in the region, our highest level ever!

Hard work pays off!

On top of a Runner Up Regional finish, our wrestling team finished 16th in ALL of 1A class schools for their overall Team GPA! This team is doing it all folks, on the mat, fundraising, in the weight room and in the classroom!!! Exactly what SMA is all about!

Wrestlers are a rare breed and the dedication is ridiculous! All of the wrestlers contribute to this accomplishment! Alyssa competed last week for the Girls Wrestling States and finished 6th. What Coach Arrington has accomplished in such a short period of time needs to be highly commended and applauded! Thank you Major Arrington for your passion, dedication and tutelage!

RIFLE TEAM NEWS

Two years ago, SMA Rifle Team sent its first two youngsters to the Olympic Training Center for the National Junior Olympics. This year, we not only had our highest number of youngsters selected, but we had our first Smallbore competitor in the USA Shooting State Champion. Trinity Gomez, who is on the SMA Rifle Club, attends Sickles High School.

Also from SMA, earning a spot was senior Cat Taylor and junior Dante Aletto who will compete in the JROTC Nationals for our 9th consecutive year and 4 straight Regional Champions on March 20-24, before heading to Colorado Springs in April.

Two other SMA cadets also made the list to compete in CO; Faye Bryans and Taryn Granger.

We are excited to see what other firsts will transpire as we head into the final leg of the 2018-2019 Competition Year. Congratulations to all!

In the case of a cadet going home, parents please first check-in to the main office to sign out your cadet.

Thank you,
