EAGLE WEEKLY
SMA HIGH SCHOOL
FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Families!

The first quarter of the school year is behind us now, as we look forward to what is traditionally thought to be a very happy holiday season. This, unfortunately, is not necessarily the norm. Many of us, and many of our children, look at this time of year with trepidation due to personal histories such as loss of a loved one, anxiety over school grades and testing, a sense of hopelessness in relation to future goals or lack there of, and overwhelming pressures to do well in school - please the family - and conform to peer expectations. As we move into this season, please take the time to do some of the following with your cadets and the rest of your children:
  • Have dinner with your family and talk about what "good" things are happening at school, work, etc.
  •  Ask about their dreams, desires, delights - let them just talk about who, what, and where they want to be - it could help with direction and making the connection between hard work (at school) and the achievement of their dreams
  • Discuss what they are reading for their "fun" personal reading at school - what makes this book interesting? do you feel like you can connect of understand one of the characters? do you think I would enjoy reading it?
  • Just have some fun with your kids - it may seem at times that teens don't want to talk with their parents, but actually they just don't want to be talked "at" by their parents, or their Teachers

Thank you for all you do - you ARE the first, and most important, Teacher!

Have a great weekend!

Respectfully,

SMA-LTC Frederick T. Fout
Head of School
