INTERNATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK

The 1st Annual SMA International Heritage Celebration has concluded and was a HUGE, very big, success. Many people worked very hard to make this happen.

Monday was Chinese Day. SMA-CPT Jing Wang-McPherson and her Chinese students handed out typical Chinese treats, had a calligraphy station, a Chinese wishing tree, displayed some beautiful artwork done by students, and displayed some typical Chinese artifacts. Traditional Chinese music filled the air.
Tuesday was an amazing International Day Market with 10 teachers preparing food from countries all around the world. These teachers came wearing clothes representing their country and decorated their tables with amazing items from their cultures. Music was played from each country represented. Students mixed and mingled and experienced a true market feel---and tastes. Teachers that prepared food and tables are: Elmir (Lebanon/Middle East), Harvey (Canada), Chipman (South Africa), Gillotte (Morocco/Algeria), Chenkus (Poland), Cohen (Italy), Vanston (SriLanka), Wasserman (Jewish), Donehew (Ireland) and Marks (Uganda).
Wednesday was Hispanic Celebration Day. Luciano Meadows and her students worked diligently to acquire local restaurants to prepare food from various Hispanic cultures. Her students also prepared food and decorated tables representing their countries. The local merchants that contributed to the event are: Baked by Elisa (Dominican Republic), Bitia's Taqueria (El Salvador), Rincon Cubano (Cuba) and El Patio Latino (Peruvian), all located in Sarasota. The SMA families contributing food to the event are Maravi (Peru), Medrano Mendez (El Salvador), Valentin (Dominican Republic), Marmolejos (Dominican Republic), Castro-Marques (Brazil), Santana (Brazil), Silva (Brazil), Rodriguez-Torres (Puerto Rico), William (Puerto Rico), Eng (Cuba). Renicito, a local Cuban performer, performed Cuban music. He can be seen at Classico, Fogartville, Rincon Cubana, and other local events ( http://go.activecalendar.com/renesito/?view=list&search=y ).
Additionally, the IB International Heritage Cadet Committee worked tirelessly to organize, set-up, clean-up and man tables at this event. Thank you to everyone that worked so hard to make this celebration of cultures at SMA celebrated and honored!
