RAIDERS LEAD THE WAY!

The Raiders were at their national competition this past weekend in Molena, Georgia. It was a wet/cold weekend, and at times, pretty darn nice. Leaves in full color-changing mode, etc... This is a huge event, with over 130 teams from over 85 schools, from 23 different states in attendance. As always, our cadets represented us with dignity, honor and good sportsmanship. We fielded 4 teams: Male/Female/Mixed and Lil Train (Lil Train competed in the JV event on Friday....the main event was on Saturday).

Our Lil Train (JV Team) led by Juliana Rendle, performed magnificently, and although we thought they were going to win the JV event, took 4th place overall (missing 3rd by ONE SECOND on 1 event). We (us coaches) believe that there were a few "Varsity" teams in this category this year that slipped in...not very noble, but our Lil Train held their own. One of their defining moments was posting the best time in the Physical Team Test, taking 1st place in that particular event. Although they received a trophy in all 4 events, 4th overall was their final resting place.

Although our male team posted a couple PR's on a couple events, they came up short at the end of the day. They were ALL 1st year Raiders with the exception of their leader: Noah Neitlich. Under his leadership, they fought hard and made us proud. They will all undoubtedly be major contributing factors in the next 2-3 seasons.

Our Female team (led by Rosana Viera), probably surprised us the most. We didn't field our typical "SMA Female" team.... The girls on this team were a mixture of young Raider veterans and new Raiders. Not our fastest female team by far, and at any given time, 4-5 were injured. But somehow, someway, in what is the toughest field of females teams they will face this year, they came out in 4th place overall, and would have taken 3rd if not for a bogus penalty in one of their events. They really shocked their coaches and did awesome!

At the end of the day, the story was all about our Mixed Team in the Varsity Category. Led by Anjolie Berninger, consisting of 9 seniors, 2 sophomores and 1 freshman, they blew the competition away! They won 1st place overall, unseating the current 2-time defending champions from Cape Coral, Florida (the RED Knights... only fitting the BLACK Knights took em out)! Super proud of this team and their division is immersed with super talented teams from around the country. They set two records from the SMA Raider team on Saturday... 1. They are our team's FIRST Mixed team to ever win a title higher than districts, and 2. The boys on this team are the FIRST boys to earn a National Army Raider championship title.

Congrats to the SMA Black Knight Mixed Team: NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

If you see them, be sure to congratulate them:

HEROINES IN ARMS SERVING PROUDLY
A BOOK BY SMA CADETS

Last year, several of our Cadets went to a Tiger Bay Luncheon to honor Veterans. Phyllis Diblasi, the Veteran Volunteer Coordinator asked SMA if they would be interested in recording the history of several female WWII veterans.

SMA Captain Mackey and SMA Captain Vanston reached out to their classes about putting a documentary together to record the experiences from several women that were some of the first to serve in our country's military.

At a time when a women position in society was defined and traditional, these strong and inspirational women became role models for their time as well as for our young cadets today.
It was an honor to get to know these true patriots and record their history in our documentary video and book (link below).

The cadets volunteered to be a part of this took the time to research the history of our country's armed forces and the roles of women during that time and then wrote questions to ask during the interviews they conducted.

Cadets: Daniel Hernandez-Curiel, Kacee Bonilla Martinez, Genesis Wesley, Quinn Selby-Gomez, Nicole Fic and Hannah Phillips.
If you see any of these Cadets, make sure to tell them what a great job they did!
