Congratulations to our 3rd rotation of the SMH/SMA internship for their completion of a 12 week oncology rotation. Cadets, Holly Batchelder and Megan Schute, embarked on a journey of rotations such as surgery, genetic counseling, nursing, and trauma to gain experience and knowledge in the medical field.
The internship is coordinated by Doctor Patella here at SMA and Doctor Fiorica Chief Medical Officer at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Also pictured is nursing oncology leaders, Barbara Poropat and Tamela Fonseca, who aided the Cadets through the rotations. Students who have taken the Careers in Medicine course at SMA are given the opportunity to participate in this internship. Once a week students go to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to shadow oncology staff. They go through rotations in multiple fields of medicine and can really see what working at a hospital is like. Students chosen have a passion for the medical fields and wish to pursue a career later in life. This sets them one step ahead of their peers. All in all, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our SMA cadets.
Now a new group of students are embarking on their journey into the professional medical world. Cadets Lukas Souza, Jonathan Barroso, and Isabella Evans (pictured with Head of School, SMA-COL Bowman and teacher, Doctor Patella) were selected for the spring semester internship. We wish them the best of luck and are confident that they will excel!
