This purpose presentation is to discuss the unique characteristics of Veterans, the potential clinical issues faced in their day-to-day life, and strategies that clinicians can implement if they knowingly have a Veteran present for EAP and/or clinical services.

Goals:


  1. By the end of the presentation participants will be able to describe the basic definition of the term 'Veteran'
  2. By the end of the presentation participants will have a basic understanding of 5 special topics related to the treatment of Veterans and their families
  3. By the end of the presentation participants will be able to describe short term modalities that can be used with Veterans in the EAP setting


Objectives:


  1. Participants will be able to identity (3) strategies they can put into practice when working with Veterans and/or their family members
  2. Participants will be able to identify (3) specific resources they can give to clinets who identify as Veterans in the EAP and/or clinical setting

Bio:

Amanda Saoit is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 10 years of experience helping youth, adults and

families overcome a variety of challenges, including trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction recovery, and major life

transitions. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive-behavioral therapy

(CBT) for substance use disorders. Amanda has worked in a variety of settings including community mental health clinics,

the Texas prison system, drug treatment facilities, and the Veterans Health Administration. During her time at the VA,

Amanda worked in the substance use, mental health, and homeless programs. She currently works in the private sector

providing teletherapy.
