Message from EAPO's CEO
Looking Ahead Together
On June 15th, we marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) witnessing an inspiring commitment to the dignity, safety and rights of older adults. Thank you for your part in making this year's Anniversary so meaningful.
In the background, our staff, Board, local EAPrevention Networks and community partners continue to work diligently to strengthen community capacity as we prepare for the fall. Recent weeks have underscored the mounting challenges older adults face - extreme heat, wildfires and other climate-related emergencies, reminding us that they must never be overlooked in emergency planning, community resilience or public policy. Protecting their health, well-being and rights requires collective action by informed communities.
We invite you to reconnect with us through the many upcoming webinars, professional learning opportunities and community conversations addressing abuse, ageism and ensuring stronger consumer protections and healthy aging. EAPO, congratulates older persons globally, Civil Society and Member States who's decades of advocacy have brought us to this inflection point - the drafting of the UN convention on the Rights of Older Persons. At the 62nd session of the HR Council in Geneva, this past July, the Intergovernmental Working Group (IGWG1) has now moved drafting the content for the first legally binding instrument dedicated specifically to the Human Rights of older persons. This is an extraordinary moment for advocates everywhere, recognizing that civic engagement has never been more important. By staying informed and engaged, we each help build safer, more inclusive communities.
We have an exciting series of webinars and special events on the horizon, so keep an eye on your inbox for plentiful Save the Date announcements coming your way. On behalf of the entire EAPO team, thank you for your continued commitment to preventing elder abuse and advancing the rights of older adults. And, as the song says… see you in September. Wishing you an enjoyable remainder of the summer.
Marta Hajek,
CEO
