Welcome to our July e-Newsletter!

On June 21st we officially welcomed the summer solstice, yet who can believe it's already August 1st. Mother Nature has certainly brought many challenges to our doorsteps this year (heatwaves, wildfires, tornados and heavy rains to name a few) leaving us to wonder what else might be in store for the road ahead. Regardless of our individual circumstances, we must all do our part to stay informed and be prepared to safeguard against not only the elements, but from individuals who would act inappropriately to take advantage of us or do us harm.

EAPO applies that 'need to be prepared'  lens to all that we undertake. Our staff team is working hard, organizing new educational workshops, training forums, conferences and community events. And while we've celebrated WEAAD and a number of awareness raising milestones, there's so much more in store. The calendar is loaded with new learning opportunities, featuring new speakers/presenters on a variety of topics, to foster connections with community partners and beyond.

This is the Year of Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World... and we invite you to join us, whether visiting our website to learn of developments in the field of aging, or gather important resources, subscribe to our newsletters to stay informed, or follow us on social media, participate in our provincial webinars, or consider volunteering with a local Elder Abuse Prevention Network in your community.

Together we CAN make a difference and stop the abuse. By adding your voice and taking a stand against ageism, the root cause of elder abuse, we can help ensure that human rights of seniors remain a priority in Canada and are protected for generations to come.

Enjoy the summer and as the song says, see you in September!

NEW EAPO Resources

Let's Talk about Ageism

Ageism affects us all over the course of our lives but it gets worse as we age. The message we absorb every day is clear: the older you get, the less you matter. Ageism whittles us down and has a direct connection to elder abuse. It's time to be free from ageism.

This video was developed by Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario (EAPO), in collaboration with the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA) and the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children (CREVAWC). Funded by the Government of Ontario.

A special issue on Elder Abuse in the LGBT Community: A Hidden Problem

(Guest Editors: Dr. Gloria Gutman, Dr. Jennifer Marchbank and Dr. Claire Robson)

The Editors are encouraging researchers to submit both theoretical and empirical articles on the under-researched area of elder abuse of 2SLGBTQ+ persons. 2SLGBTQ+ older adults face vulnerabilities that cause them to experience elder abuse in ways that are specific to their communities and in turn present additional barriers to their health and well-being. 2SLGBTQ+ older adults face isolation, (often more likely to be living alone than their heterosexual peers), a lack of social services and a deficit of culturally competent service providers to support their needs.

This special issue is designed to build upon and extend the work featured in the recently published book Elder abuse in the LGBTQ2S+ population: the impact of homophobia and transphobia (Robson, Marchbank, Gutman & Prentice, Springer Nature, 2023). The Deadline for Submission is October 31, 2023.
