TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HVAC SYSTEM MORE EFFICIENT FOR EARTH DAY

In celebration of Earth Day tomorrow we would like to share a few tips on maintaining a clean and efficient HVAC system. This special day is devoted to the planet's environment & raising awareness about pollution.

Participating in Earth Day is easy and simple! If you are looking for opportunities to shrink your carbon footprint and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, consider some improvements you can make to your HVAC system. Not only are these small changes great for the environment—but can also make a big difference in your heating and cooling bills.

When was the last time you replaced/changed the filters?

Spring is in full swing and more families are spending more time at home right now relaxing and enjoying the time with family and friends. Earth Day is a great time to swap out your filters and establish a habit of changing them as recommended by the manufacturer. If you have seasonal allergies or pets, it is even more important to do this to help with those allergies and the dust your unit filters out!

Adjust your thermostat

Your thermostat can decide a lot when it comes to your home. We call it the brains of your system and it can be another tool to conserve energy and save money. Programming your thermostat to a warmer temperature in the summer when away from home or while you sleep at night can provide you with significant savings! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting.” With a programmable thermostat, you can set it and forget it. There is no need to waste energy cooling your home if you aren't there. The less your system has to work to keep you comfortable, the less energy it has to use (which saves you money and helps your unit last longer).

Use window coverings throughout your home

Another simple way to improve energy savings is by utilizing or installing blinds, drapes/and curtains. With window blinds, you have full control over how much sunlight you let in. This keeps your interiors cooler and greatly reduces your AC costs. They also help keep your rooms cool by not letting sunlight (heat) in through the windows. According to the Department of Energy, "medium-colored draperies with white plastic backings can reduce heat gain by 33 percent."
