Summer 2022 Study Abroad Updates from Asia Centers
Please note the following decisions are tentative and will be subject to change in accordance with public health guidance and travel policies. Further updates will be listed as needed.

Updates as of February 2022:
  • In response to Harvard's ongoing travel restrictions, the Asia Center will consider funding undergraduate and graduate research grant applications for students who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Travel within the United States and internationally is permitted (although the student travel policies still apply for international travel). Please see the Harvard Travel Guidance website for up to date information.
  • Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) will announce sometime in early 2022 whether its Summer '22 language intensive will take place as planned on the campus of Doshisha University. If not, the program will take place virtually, as in 2021.
  • Kansai Gaidai University's Summer Asian Studies initiatives will be held online in 2022, as in 2021.
  • Available programs include the ASP Home-Based Program (online ASP courses), the Online Summer Program during June and July, and the Intercultural Engagement Program (IEP), a student-led virtual initiative for Japanese and foreign students to learn about each other.   • Students of the KGIP program may be invited to participate in the Kansai Gaidai Internship Program.

HKS Evidence for Policy Design's "Evidence Corps Internship Program": Summer Internship with Asian Development Bank Institute - Japan (Remote)

Organization Description
The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) is the Tokyo-based think tank of the Asian Development Bank, which supports a multilateral development bank for Asia and the Pacific. ADBI conducts evidence-based policy research and capacity building and training programs for eliminating poverty and promoting sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth across the region.  

Internship Details
Internship Opportunities: 2 Undergraduates 
Dates: 8 weeks, between June and August 
Location: Most likely remote, but a possibility to be based in Tokyo, Japan 
Preferred Qualifications: An interest in issues related to Asian economic and financial development. Preferably working towards a degree in economics.  

Responsibilities  
The first opportunity is focused on a project related to low-carbon cooling, supporting visualization of main findings and policy recommendations, data collection, and brief case-boxes related to cooling policies. Ideally, candidates will have an interest in renewable energy and energy conservation. 
The second opportunity will be for an internship responsible for preparing literature reviews and data analysis related to total factor productivity (TFP) growth and resilience to shocks in emerging Asia.

The Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations is seeking dedicated Harvard College undergraduate students to work as interns during the 2021-2022 academic year. We invite students who are passionate about diversity education, culturally affirming programming, and have a willingness to engage with matters of identity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to apply for this role. This internship is an academic year-long professional development opportunity with the possibility of continuity for returning interns who have a satisfactory performance. Interns are paid $15/hour and are expected to work 8-10 hours per week, averaging 9hrs/week during the semester.

INTERNSHIP QUALIFICATIONS
(1) Be an enrolled first-year or second-year Harvard College undergraduate student in good standing
(2) Ability to commit to the role for the entire remainder of the 2021-2022 academic year with a possibility for continuation (exceptions made for returning interns who select to study abroad)

Become a Youth Mentor through Harvard Ed Portal!

For over a decade, Harvard undergraduates have provided engaging, interdisciplinary mentoring to the youth of Allston-Brighton. Now, in addition to working with 3rd–8th graders, undergraduate Mentors are involved in all aspects of Harvard Ed Portal (HEP) programming for youth and adults, including the arts, digital literacy, health and wellness, workforce development, and college and career preparedness for middle school and high school students. HEP Mentors develop their own curricula or collaborate with other undergraduates, graduate students from the Harvard School of Education, staff, or visiting experts (for example, an artist in residence).

The Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA) is currently accepting submissions for its first issue. CJA is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for creative and academic pieces on Asia, the Asian diaspora, and comparative studies broadly related to Asia. It addresses an urgent need for more representation and understanding of Asian narratives in Western academic and artistic circles. 
We welcome both academic papers (>4,000 words) and creative works (<2,000 words), which includes poetry, prose, and original translations. Undergraduate students of all majors and class years at any university are encouraged to submit. The regular deadline for submissions is Feb. 28, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. The priority deadline is Feb. 14, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and all applicants will hear back about the status of their submission by mid-March.

China Forum
Founded in 1998, Harvard College China Forum is currently the largest China-focused conference in the New England area and annually attracts audiences from all over North America.
