Austin Dean to present on China's monetary reform on September 17

The Institute for Chinese Studies will present a lecture by Austin Dean, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on Friday, September 17 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The lecture will be available online via Zoom as well as in person at 253 Denney Hall (164 Annie & John Glenn Ave.). Registration for the in-person lecture is limited to 15 attendees due to reduced room capacity related to COVID-19 concerns. Anyone not able to attend in person is welcome to join the event online. Professor Dean will present "China and the End of Global Silver, 1873-1937."

Abstract: In the late nineteenth century, as much of the world adopted some variant of the gold standard, China remained the most populous country still using silver. Yet China had no unified national currency; there was not one monetary standard but many. Silver coins circulated alongside chunks of silver and every transaction became an "encounter of wits."

China and the End of Global Silver, 1873–1937 focuses on how officials, policy makers, bankers, merchants, academics, and journalists in China and around the world answered a simple question: how should China change its monetary system? Far from a narrow, technical issue, Chinese monetary reform is a dramatic story full of political revolutions, economic depressions, chance, and contingency. As different governments in China attempted to create a unified monetary standard in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the United States, England, and Japan tried to shape the direction of Chinese monetary reform for their own benefit. Austin Dean argues convincingly that the Silver Era in world history ended owing to the interaction of imperial competition in East Asia and the state-building projects of different governments in China. When the Nationalist government of China went off the silver standard in 1935, it marked a key moment not just in Chinese history but in world history.

September 1 deadline approaching for K-12 Global Fellowship Program applications

Applications are now being accepted for the OIA Area Studies Centers' 2021-2022 K-12 Global Fellowship Program. The program's aim is to connect teachers from across the state of Ohio in a series of discussion group sessions that focus on contemporary issues from a global perspective. The sessions will take place on Saturdays throughout the 2021-2022 academic year from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. via remote delivery.

Participation will depend on the completion and acceptance of a program application and attendance at all sessions is required. The program cohort will be limited to 40 pre- and in-service teachers and each participant will receive 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU) and text resources to use in their classrooms for completing the program. Two weeks prior to each session, participants will be provided with a reading to prepare in advance and each session will include a lecture by a guest expert followed by group discussion.

The theme for this year’s program is “Suppression of Independent Media Outlets and Journalism.” In this year’s program teachers will learn about the struggles that journalists and independent media outlets face when covering issues and events in different regions across the globe. Additionally, the program will cover state run media outlets, how they function, and how they shape the public’s perception of local and world events and other media outlets. The pedagogy session will give participants tips and strategies on how to teach students to find reliable sources and identifying bias in media.

OIA accepting submissions for annual international photography competition

All students, faculty, staff, visiting scholars and alumni of The Ohio State University are invited to submit their photos to the 2021 International Photography Competition. Entries will be accepted through September 22. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your original photographs from around the world. In addition to honoring the Best in Show, first, second and third place winners will be selected in the following categories: People, Places and Arts & Culture. There will also be People's Choice awards for the photos that receive the highest votes via the Facebook voting phase. Prizes are awarded to winners.

NoteWorthy, a new student organization dedicated to music cultures around the world, recruiting new members

NoteWorthy, a new student organization dedicated to showcasing and sharing student musical talent from music cultures around the world, is recruiting members. Any student currently enrolled at Ohio State is eligible to join. Biweekly meetings will be held on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. Professor Michelle Wibbelsman, Deparment of Spanish & Portuguese, will serve as the faculty advisor.

Purpose Statement: Our purpose is to create a setting for musicians of primarily non-Western backgrounds to practice and perform in. We want to give a noteworthy voice to music cultures and musicians from those cultures who feel that their art is underrepresented around campus. We also want to raise an awareness of music, dance, and art between different cultures by uniting all of our voices and sharing an important part of our identities with one another.
