Xinda Lian, Brigid Vance to present "Dream as a Method" workshop on March 12

The Institute for Chinese Studies will present a workshop featuring Xinda Lian, Denison University, and Brigid Vance, Lawrence University, on Friday, March 12 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. online (registration required). Professors Lian and Vance will present "Dream as Method: When the Real is Unreal."

Abstract: As is the case with other cultural traditions, the fascination with the “realm of dream” in China dates back to ancient times. When the quest for the mechanism behind the entangled relationship between the dream world and “reality” expanded to the field of literature and art, it takes the form of a narrative mode in which the mundane human experience is allowed an extra—otherwise impossible—spatial-temporal dimension. In the hands of the most talented writers, this narrative mode goes beyond dream in the literal sense and becomes a way of binary thinking capable of revealing the true nature of both the link and divide between “illusion” and “reality.” Though the contents and forms of the oneiric stories may vary, they are always bent on doing the same thing: to prove that the “unreal” is real, if the “real” is not necessarily unreal.

Javier Cha, Paula Curtis, Xin Yu to present digital humanities seminar on March 17

The East Asian Studies Center, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin, will present a Midwestern Professionalization Seminar in East Asian Studies featuring guest speakers Javier Cha, Seoul National University; Paula Curtis, Yale University; and Xin Yu, Washington University, St. Louis, on Wednesday, March 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. online (registration required). The guest speakers will discuss how to use digital methods in research and teaching and more as a means to advance one's academic career.

March 3 deadline approaching to register for BEAL Forum 4

The deadline to register for the Buckeye East Asian Linguistics (BEAL) Forum 4, to be held on Friday, March 5 from 8:45 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. online, is approaching. The BEAL Forum, sponsored by EASC, provides a platform primarily for graduate students to articulate and exchange ideas on their research findings with forum participants. It is a one-day event with keynote lectures and students’ presentation sessions. Previously, students’ presentation sessions were all posters. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these sessions will, instead, be oral, 15-minute presentations via Zoom. The Forum is intended to showcase regional research activities in East Asian linguistics. The event is free and open to the public, although pre-registration is required by Wednesday, March 3 in order to obtain the Zoom link.

Keynote speakers include: Haruko M. Cook, University of Hawaii; Kang-kwong Luke, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and Jiwon Yun, Stony Brook University.

CLLC to present Lunar New Year 2021 virtual exhibit

The Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures (CLLC) has created a virtual celebration to mark the 15th anniversary of the Lunar New Year celebration. There will be performances of calligraphy, paper cutting, martial arts, music, and dancing to celebrate the Year of the Ox, which in Chinese culture stands for determination, persistence, strength, and hard work.
