BEAL Forum 5 to be held on October 28

The Dept. of East Asian Languages and Literatures, with support from the East Asian Studies Center, will hold the Buckeye East Asian Linguistics Forum 5 on Friday, October 28 via Zoom (registration required to access).

The BEAL Forum provides a platform primarily for graduate students to articulate and exchange ideas on their research findings with forum participants. It is a one-day event with keynote lectures and students’ presentation sessions. The forum is intended to showcase regional research activities in East Asian linguistics. The event is free and open to the public, although pre-registration is required in order to obtain the Zoom link.

Keynote speakers include: Hana Kang, University of Notre Dame; Masahiko Minami, San Francisco State University; and Peggy Pik Ki Mok, Chinese University of Hong Kong.

CSTW to hold global writers workshop on October 14

The Center for the Study of Teaching and Writing will hold the "Teaching Global Writers in US Classrooms" workshop on Friday, October 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. via Zoom (registration required).

The workshop will help faculty, writing assistants, and other professionals work more effectively with international students in U.S. classrooms by addressing some of the most significant challenges international students face when writing for American colleges and universities. The Writing Across the Curriculum team from CSTW will share insights from multilingual, global writers and their experiences writing in US classrooms, share strategies to support writers in a range of classrooms, and give participants an opportunity to brainstorm strategies for their own classrooms.

Ken Kawashima to present on Uno Kozo's Theory of Crisis on October 7

The Dept. of Geography will present a lecture by Ken Kawashima, University of Toronto, on Friday, October 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 1080 Derby Hall. Prof. Kawashima will present "Uno Kozo's Theory of Crisis Today."

Abstract: My talk discusses Uno Kozo’s Theory of Crisis (恐慌論), a book originally published in Japan and in Japanese in 1953, and which I have translated into English (Brill Publishers, Historical Materialism Series, 2021; Haymarket Books, 2022, forthcoming). I discuss how this is a useful book—not only for Marxist theory but also for the social sciences and humanities in general—because it gives us a clear theory, method and narrative to understand and explain a deeply complex problem of the world of capital, a problem that has not only defined the experience of modernity, but also the experience of our historical present today. This is the problem of why the phenomenon of capitalist crisis repeats periodically, and why crisis is inevitable and necessary for the reproduction of what Marx called the capitalist mode of production.
