Community Learning Series
|
|
Join us for our next Kings Community Learning series entitled, "Why Cultural Competency? I've Had Diversity Training."
Representatives from the company,
Did You Know Publishing,
Monica Marsh and Marla Marsh will host an engaging, interactive, and reflective presentation, participants will experience a variety of ways to interact effectively across cultures and races. These dynamic presenters incorporate fun and humor into the training in order to produce changes that last beyond the presentation.
Participants will engage in a collection of activities that help learners understand core concepts related to culture and cultural competence. This includes how to define culture creatively and understand the process of cultural competence development. The exercises presented in this presentation build awareness of how cultures form, the importance of perspective-switching, and the nature of culture change.
This presentation will be held on January 29, and begin at 7:00 pm at the Kings Junior High School Multipurpose Room (enter door D-5 from the parking lot located between the Kings Junior High School and the football stadium).

KHS/KJH Hope Squad Retreat
|
|
On Friday, January 11, Kings High School and Kings Junior High officially kicked off the Hope Squad program with a retreat at Camp Joy. Solutions of Warren County trained students on the signs of suicide and QPR (
question, persuade, and refer)
. Students learned there are many signs of suicide, such as changes in behavior, giving away prized possessions, talking about "not being around anymore" and mentioning comments about suicide.
Camp Joy staff facilitated group activities in which students learned more about each other. Students participated in great conversations about the purpose of Hope Squad and the impact they hope to make on their school and community. Students wrapped up the day by sharing an adjective to describe the day. Many students described the day as "inspiring" and "fun" and "connected."
Monthly Hope Squad meetings will begin in January and our Hope Squad members will be planning a Hope Week to launch in the spring!

The South Lebanon Elementary Green Gang, comprised of the entire SLE third grade is making a difference in many ways. In what used to be the after school EClub, a club which focused on being environmentally responsible, the Gang now has taken over as a class to help with activities such as the school wide recycling, filling bird feeders to participate in Cornell University's Citizen Science Program - Feeder Watch, using technology to share data and results of the projects they're working on, and feeding the local wildlife on the nature trail to capture images and video clips on their new trail cam.
SLE Third Grade Teacher, Juli Elder, last year's Project Excellence award recipient was awarded funds to use at SLE. She chose to purchase a trail camera to use this year. Each week the students are working on retrieving the camera from the trail and using the images and videos to track the number of species, number of visitations, as well as the time and temp of each visit. The students then put together a quick video to share with the entire school to talk about what they are seeing each week.
Elder said, "It's been so much fun watching the kiddos' faces light up when we get to see and talk about the special species that are visiting our trail each day. And we love being able to help take care them by providing food and a salt lick to help get them through those cold winter nights." The SLE PTO has helped to supply the food for the project. "A big thank you goes out to them for helping to provide such a memorable experience for our kiddos," she said.
