Did you know that more than a half-million pounds of crayons are thrown away each year creating a waxy sludge that clogs landfills and never biodegrades? Beginning next week, October 8, Kings Mills Elementary Art Teacher, Katie Heagan is introducing
The Crayon Initiative
, a program that collects used crayons and recycles them to donate to art programs at children's hospitals across the United States.
Would you like to help? We are asking anyone in the community to drop off your used crayons packaged in a Ziploc bag to KME. There is a box in the front entrance of the school. Collect as many "old" crayons from home or restaurants to donate.Crayons will be collected through November 5.
Here is a great video about The Crayon Initiative.

The students in Valerie Eldrige's Honors Spanish lV classes at Kings High School were treated to a Breakout Room, Spanish style! The ever-popular Breakout Room is an exciting new form of live action entertainment. In this case, students were having fun and learning at the same time!
Ms. Eldridge used kits from Breakout EDU, an education platform that offers educational games that require critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. She used the Spanish version giving the students 40 minutes to solve a puzzle about one of Spain's most precious paintings that was stolen from a museum. Students had to solve clues in Spanish to win the challenge.
Eldridge said she had one team in each class successfully escape. Saying, "
It was so fun to watch my students interact with one another in a different way than I normally see within the classroom.
My students did a great job working together and using their critical thinking skills."
