Thoughtexchange #3 Results
|
|
The results are in from the third Thoughtexchange on the final draft of the Kings Master Facilities Plan. In the latest Thoughtexchange, we asked our community to tell us their thoughts and questions regarding the building draft.
The main takeaways from this process include that the community generally likes the building plan. There is concern whether the current building plan will be suitable for additional growth and costs being fiscally responsible. This feedback is important and our Long Range Facility Planning Team is taking all of the thoughts into consideration.
Mr. Ackermann recommended to the Board of Education this week to wait until August or November of 2019 to run a bond issue for the new building plan. Waiting will allow the District Team to perform due diligence with assuring we are being cost effective and building for the future. The Team will focus on soil samples, road improvements, assuring we have enough square footage at each building, pedestrian traffic, storm water retention, permitting, and swing space. Additionally, we are working on an FAQ document that addresses some of the most prevalent questions from our community. We will be sharing that very soon.

Veterans Day was again celebrated in a big way in our District! Over 500 veterans were honored and recognized throughout our school buildings. Students met Veterans who served in World War ll, as well as those who have just recently served in Afghanistan.
Some of the buildings held breakfasts, lunches, parades, and assemblies. It was truly a moving day around the District, a day we look forward to every year!

The students in Mrs. Bowman and Mr. DeVore's 4th grade classes at J.F. Burns Elementary had a visit from Mr. David Snyder, dad of 4th grader, James. Snyder visited the classes to do a presentation about the organization he works for, Sustainable Medical Missions.
He travels to India and Africa to teach and train people in communities who need medical attention. They often treat neglected tropical diseases and do so through sports, music and teaching. He brought with him a friend, Emmanuel, the African Director from Rwanda.
Bowman said, "The students enjoyed learning about their experiences, shared pictures and videos, and answered our many questions!" Mr. Snyder shared that the best experience in this job is seeing that the greatest joy of the people of India and Africa that he works with are from the connections they have with their family and friends.

KHS Physics Classes Learn Through Archery
|
|
Chris Downing, the director of HisPins from the Heart of the Outdoors visited Melanie Contratto's
Advanced Placement and College Prep Physics classes at
Kings High School last week to give a presentation and lesson on archery. He then conducted a projectile motion lab with bows, arrows and targets for the physics students to collect data.
Students chose an archer and video-taped them to collect data and also took several measurements. After recording their data, all students were given the opportunity to test their archery skills. The students then analyzed their videos and completed calculations to determine the launch velocity of their arrows.
Mrs. Contratto said, "We have some very talented students!" The students even competed in a class competition to determine the best archer of their class. The winner then competed against Mr. Downing. Even Mrs. Contratto got in on the competition with her AP Physics class. "Mr. Ackermann even stopped in and participated and did quite well!,' she said.
