The students in Krista Nunez's The Heroes; Beyond the Cape Class at Kings High School have been working on plotting out the first cycle of three of The Hero's Journey in Beowulf.
The Hero's Journey is a broad category of tales that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed. The Heroes class is based
primarily off Mythologist, Joseph Campbell's life work. He determined that all stories from ancient history to modern culture have stories that always follow The Hero's Journey.
Throughout the semester course, juniors and seniors will read literature (poems, short stories, novels, and movie scripts) to identify and analyze the hero's in each plot. Although the setting and cultural changes exist within storytelling, The Hero's Journey remains constant.
Nunez said, "Students are still learning the journey cycle, and I wanted them to have a tangible and visual way to practice and apply what they've been learning."
