J.F. Burns Recognized as Purple Star School
Congratulations to J.F. Burns Elementary who has been recognized as a 2018 Purple Star designee by the Ohio Department of Education. The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.
The school completed an application which included sending pictures of what activities have taken place at JFB to honor Veterans and their families. The school is very military-friendly. They have several events throughout each year that includes a Veteran's Day parade with nearly 100 Veterans participating, a military care package drive where they send care packages to those currently serving on active duty or attending military academies, and a candy drive where they collect candy to send to the
Yellow Ribbon Support Center
.
A school is honored with the Purple Star Award if it completes all of the required Military friendly initiatives, plus one optional activity. The Purple Star Advisory Board, formed by the Ohio Department's of Education, Higher Education, Veterans Services and the Adjutant General, helps decide a school’s eligibility for the award.
In a letter from Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction, Paolo DeMaria wrote, "We applaud and appreciate your outstanding commitment to serving military students and families in your school. Your dedicated program truly serves as an inspiring model for other schools in Ohio to follow."
