KME 1st Graders Celebrate Chinese New Year
|
|
Mrs. Shepherd's first grade class at Kings Mills Elementary School held a Chinese New Year celebration on Tuesday, February 5. The students made lanterns, lucky money envelopes, and learned to write in Chinese. They finished the celebration with a feast of chicken and broccoli, mandarin oranges, rice, egg rolls, and of course, fortune cookies! Eating these items is believed to bring wealth, luck and happiness in the coming year.
While Lunar New Year is celebrated by many cultures around the world, the first graders focused on the traditions of China. They wish to wish all of you "Gung Hay Fat Choy!" Translation: Wishing you great happiness and prosperity!

The District celebrated Kindness Week and the Great Kindness Challenge last week but it got cut short because of our snow days. Many of the activities moved to this week to make up for the missed days.
Students participated in different activities while focusing on kindness, empathy, inclusiveness, and making connections.
The Great Kindness Challenge happens nationwide every year. It provides a powerful tool that actively engages students, teachers, administrators, families and communities in creating a culture of compassion, acceptance, unity, and respect. Those that participate are encouraged to perform as many acts of kindness as possible during the week.

A Valentine Recital and FUNdraiser
|
|
The Kings Choir Family invites you to dress up in black tie attire (if you feel like it) and enjoy a recital given by future performance majors Amy Helms, voice, and Justin Alcorn, piano.
As you arrive, you will hear the sounds of the season with roaming violinists and a jazz combo. The cost is $8 per person and includes all you can eat desserts and beverages and about an hour and a half of collegiate level music that will transport you to other musical places and time periods.
Heart and Song takes place on Saturday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kings High School Cafeteria. This is the first Independent Study Recital FUNdraiser for the Choir Department.
A little about Amy and Justin...Amy and Justin spend 7th bell every day in an Independent Study in Performance class setting. During that time, they practice and prepare to enter their respective college programs. They not only practice their instruments but also work in collaboration with one another, preparing for their work with future vocalists and pianists in the years to come.
They have chosen their repertoire, provided the program notes, worked to increase their stamina, and considered the posture and presence they should have in a recital format.
Don't miss this unique and festive opportunity. It could make the perfect Valentine's gift for your sweetheart! See below.
