KHS Students Participate in School Safety Forum
Six Kings High School student leaders joined students from other Warren County school districts on Friday, March 2 to participate in the first ever Warren County School Safety Forum.
Organized by Warren County school superintendents, the forum attracted school, state and local officials, including local law enforcement. The event was sparked by recent concerns regarding school safety. The superintendents took a different approach by asking students to give their thoughts and suggestions.
Katie Waissbluth, Nico Melton, Zoey Fitzgerald, Caleb Owens, Jackson Hacker, and John Naughton (pictured below) brought new and thoughtful ideas to the officials, including Ohio Senator Steve Wilson and Ohio Representative Scott Lipps.
Our KHS students told the officials that students need to be a part of the solution. In fact, Warren County Sheriff, Larry Sims expressed to the students that school safety is a complex issue. He said that this type conversation will go a long way. He also apologized to the students saying, "We should have engaged you in this conversation years ago.”

KME Donates to Cincinnati Zoo and Warren Co. Shelter
Kings Mills Elementary students recently participated in a community service fundraiser as part of the One Book One School Program. Each KME family was given a copy of
The One and Only Ivan
by Katherine Applegate. The story features a group of animal friends: Ivan, a gorilla, Ruby and Stella, elephants, and Bob, a stray dog.
KME students donated money to adopt a gorilla and elephant from the Cincinnati Zoo and purchased much needed supplies and dog toys for the Warren County Animal Shelter.
Pictured is KME 1st grade teacher, Christina Shepherd with the donated supplies holding Bob, a lab, possibly shepherd mix puppy that is in need of a forever home. If you would like to adopt Bob or one of his many other friends, please contact the Warren County Animal Shelter at 513-695-1176.

No Waste Lunch at SLE
During the week of February 20, the 3rd and 4th graders from the South Lebanon Elementary ECLUB taught their fellow students about bringing in packed lunches that produce no waste.
Students were encouraged to pack lunches in reusable lunch boxes, bring containers instead of sandwich bags, keep their lunches cold using ice packs, and come up with other ways to produce a no waste lunch.
Through a partnership with McCluskey Chevrolet, Lisa Maloney spent the day with SLE to help kick off this fun, educational week. Lisa and SLE Parent, Christina Dickerson helped students to pass out raffle tickets and answered questions about re-usability.
To show packing a no waste lunch makes a difference for the environment, the Friday before the No Waste Lunch was implemented the 3rd grade trash was weighed. Their lunch trash weighed 25 pounds but after the week of No Waste Lunch, there was 24 pounds of 3rd grade trash, decreasing the waste by one pound. The ECLUB hopes that waste from lunches will continue to decrease.
For every item brought in that could be recycled, students received a raffle ticket from an ECLUB member. Raffle ticket winners received reusable lunch boxes, water bottles, and other items to help pack a no waste lunch.
The ECLUB has been working with NWF (National Wildlife Foundation) for the past 2 school years. Last year, the ECLUB's goal was to work toward logging more minutes of spending time outside. This year, their goal is to take steps to lower waste. NWF partnered SLE with McCluskey Chevrolet who is sponsoring a grant of $750 to support SLE.
SLE 3rd grade teacher, Amanda Wey said, "We will use some of that grant money to supplement funds for the field trip to ARMCO Park at the end of the school year."

Kings Special Education Staff Present at HCESC
The Kings Special Education Transition team members, Amanda Pennix, Lorraine Hartke, and Lisa Orfield, recently presented to school districts in Southwest Ohio in regards to secondary transition.
Kings was one of four school districts on the panel. The panel presented on implementing transition services and activities at the high school level.
Students in grades 7-12 who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) receive an education that is designed to meet their unique needs through special education or related services, to prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.
Part of their plan includes transition planning to prepare them for their future goals. The Transition Staff works with students regarding their goals, and provides experiences for them to explore post secondary options. The students participate in activities such as interest surveys, visits to the career center, activities on Ohio Means Jobs, work study experiences, activities in Naviance, and explore disability services, to name a few.
Transition planning is critical to the success of our students at Kings High School.

KHS Knights Watch Program
The Knights Watch program is a credit recovery program at Kings High School. The program is designed to help students who are at risk of not graduating from high school earn a high school diploma in a non-traditional, flexible setting.
The program uses a computer-based curriculum from Apex Learning to allow students to work at an individual pace to complete course assignments, quizzes, and tests to earn the required courses toward graduation. Each student assigned to Knights Watch has a unique story requiring the program coordinator, school counselors, and administration to work closely together with each student and their family to set goals and achieve success.
Recently, the students in the KHS Knights Watch Program created
this video
about the program for the Apex Learning Video Challenge. The contest challenges students to tell their story on how their district, school, or classroom is using the Apex Learning digital curriculum to ensure they are ready for their next step after graduation. Prizes include an Apple iPad, a Chromebook, and Amazon gift cards. Winners will be notified on or about March 30. Good luck!

KHS Earns Highest Community Service Award
Kings High School has partnered with
InnerView.org
to help track and organize students' required community service. InnerView is the leading youth platform to help students, groups, and schools highlight community service impact, passion for causes, and connect local effort to the UN Global Goals.
Each month, InnerView highlights the accomplishments of KHS students' community service in an infograph that we share on EBBN. KHS Principal, Doug Leist was recently notified that 162 of our KHS students are national award winners for community service activities.
Schools can also earn Inspiring Service Awards based on the collective impact of their members' service activity. There are 3 award levels - Sapphire (2,000 hours), Emerald (5,000 hours), and Ruby (15,000 hours). Kings High School has been awarded the 2017-2018 Ruby Award for performing more than 15,000 hours of service this school year! KHS Transition and College Fair
At Kings High School, they focus on providing students with the best education possible. In meeting the demands of the future, they believe it’s important to allow all students the opportunity to have exposure to the various options they have available to them once they graduate from Kings High School.
In order to meet that goal, they have planned to hold their first ever Kings High School College and Transition Fair on April 23, 2018. Students in grades 9-11 will have the opportunity to attend during school hours and this event will be open to the public beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Students and parents will have the opportunity to visit different booths to increase their knowledge of post-secondary opportunities including military, two-year, and 4 year college degree programs. Additionally, there will be services available from select colleges to discuss student accessibility and accommodations at the collegiate level. As part of the event, they have also invited adult service providers, transition programs, and adult agencies to provide families with information about the opportunities available to their students post-secondary options.
We hope you are able to participate. Mark your calendars for April 23, 2018!
