KHS Students Selected for Rain Barrel Project
Students from Kings High School have been selected to paint rain barrels as part of the sixth annual Rain Barrel Art Project, an initiative designed to educate the community about water conservation and pollution caused by storm water runoff.
This year, six Kings High School students were involved in submitting two rain barrels for the event. The first barrel, designed by Tiffany Alcorn, titled "In the Garden" was inspired by the quote, "Just like the lotus we too have the ability to rise from the mud, Bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world." The barrel was painted by Kaleigh, Cooke, Madison Lunsford, Maura Juenger, and Ainslee Anderson-Clark.
The second rain barrel was designed and painted by Junior, Anna Claire Barker. Her barrel is titled "Feathers in the Rain."
The Rain Barrel Art Project is a joint effort of
SaveLocalWaters.org
and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. As part of this initiative, students and other community members throughout the Ohio River Valley submitted artistic designs to beautify otherwise dull rain barrels. About 40 of those designs were selected, and the submitting artists’ barrels will be displayed at the Cincinnati Zoo’s Go Green Garden through April and auctioned off during the Rain Barrel Art Benefit Auction between April 9 and April 19, 2018. An E-Bay platform will be used to accept bids on the barrels.
The project, hosted by the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, is a joint effort to educate the community about water conservation and pollution caused by storm water runoff. The Rain Barrel Art Project desires to educate people on environmental issues like storm water runoff, watersheds, and water conservation.
KHS Art Teacher, Carrie Cooke said, "We have enjoyed being a part of this project and hope to spread the word about the importance of being an active participant in saving our precious resources."
Pictured left is Anna Claire's barrel and Ainslee Anderson-Clark, Kaleigh Cooke, and Madison Lunsford with their painted barrel.

Schedule Changes for 2018-2019
The Kings Board of Education voted on Tuesday, March 20 to discontinue weekly Early Release and to add a later start time for grades 7-12 for the 2018-2019 school year.
The district sent out a survey in February to parents with students in grades 6-11 with questions regarding eliminating Early Release and also asking if they saw a benefit to a 30-minute later start time. The survey received 721 responses.
We asked the question, "I see a benefit for a 30-minute later start time for junior high and high school students." The survey results showed that 613 of the respondents answered neutral to strongly agree.
Research shows that a later start time for this grade level of students can be beneficial. Kings Superintendent, Tim Ackermann said, "Implementing the later start time is a significant change that positively affects their health, safety, and learning."
Additionally, our survey results showed that nearly 80% of respondents (between neutral and strongly agree) answered that the elimination of Early Release would be easier on their family schedule. The district has added two additional in-service days next school year to replace the professional development time lost from the eliminated Early Release time.
The district would like to thank those who took the time to answer the survey. "The feedback from our community is important, relevant, and helps us in making decisions for the district," said Ackermann.

March 20 - Busy Day at KHS
On Tuesday, March 20 the entire junior class at Kings Highs School took the state-funded ACT test. In July of 2016, the Ohio Department of Education announced that State law requires districts and community schools to administer the state-funded
ACT
or SAT to all grade 11 students in the spring of the school year.
While the juniors were testing, the seniors started their morning with a Senior Breakfast sponsored by the KHS PTO and then spent time making videos, working on community service projects, and viewing videos about college, leadership, and finances.
The freshman and sophomores participated in some career exploration activities and heard from speakers from various career fields. KHS invited 25-30 professionals from a variety of careers to talk to the students in small groups, including Michael Munoz who spoke about character and leadership.
All of students came together in the gymnasium at the end of the day to participate in some fun activities with the KHS Staff.

World Down Syndrome Day
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. Celebrated on the 21
st
day of the third month of each year, this date is symbolic of the third copy of the 21
st
chromosome characterizing Down syndrome.
Mrs. Caitlyn Smith, 5th grade teacher at Columbia Intermediate School said, "One of the things that those of us who have loved ones with Down Syndrome do on this special day is wear crazy socks. It's a tradition started by Down Syndrome societies to signify how the extra chromosome brings extra fun!"
Kings Preschoolers, Joshua Dineen, Evie Alge, and their classmates were hoping to celebrate Down Syndrome Day in Mrs. Frazier's classroom by wearing their brightest socks to preschool. Unfortunately, the district had a snow day. But, we challenged our Facebook friends to send us their pictures of their crazy socks that day. See below.

KHS Transition and College Fair
At Kings High School, they focus on providing students with the best education possible. In meeting the demands of the future, they believe it’s important to allow all students the opportunity to have exposure to the various options they have available to them once they graduate from Kings High School.
In order to meet that goal, they have planned to hold their first ever Kings High School College and Transition Fair on April 23, 2018. Students in grades 9-11 will have the opportunity to attend during school hours and this event will be open to the public beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Students and parents will have the opportunity to visit different booths to increase their knowledge of post-secondary opportunities including military, two-year, and 4 year college degree programs. Additionally, there will be services available from select colleges to discuss student accessibility and accommodations at the collegiate level. As part of the event, they have also invited adult service providers, transition programs, and adult agencies to provide families with information about the opportunities available to their students post-secondary options.
We hope you are able to participate. Mark your calendars for April 23, 2018!
