Basic Health & Safety Training with Supporting Breastfeeding in Child Care (Virtual)

Forced Separation: The Effects of Incarceration and Deportation on Young Children (Virtual )
Thursday, 3/12/2026, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
This training was designed to provide childcare providers with information regarding trauma experienced due to parental incarceration and deportation. This training is needed as the United States has the largest prison population in the world and this adversely effects children. Current federal and local legislations changes are causing a strong enforcement of immigration laws, causing numerous children to be separated from their parents. This information is beneficial to participants because it will help them to recognize and even possibly prevent some of the possible outcomes of the trauma that is associated with these two extreme separations. It will also provide adequate resources to help children and their families.

Our March Spotlight features Tree of Life Early Learning Cener! The program thoughtfully incorporated a cozy corner into their classroom to support children's social emotional development. This intentional space provides the children a safe, calming environment to label feelings, practice self-regulation as well as practice calming techniques. | | Children's Mental Health Matters Campaign 2026 | | |
Each year, Howard County Office of Children and Families participates in the annual Children's Mental Health Matters Campaign, which is sponsored by Mental Health Association of Maryland (MHAMD), with support from the Maryland Department of Health-Behavioral Health Administration, Maryland Family Network, and other partners. As a part of the 2026 Children's Mental Health Matters Campaign, our office will be hosting a week-long series of virtual workshops designed to support educators of children from birth to age five. Each evening session will focus on social-emotional development, mental health resources, and practical activities educators can use right away. Workshops will be held virtually during the evenings of May 4-7 so save the dates and stay tuned for series topics and speakers. Topics Include

Don’t let challenging behaviors become unmanageable, the IECMH team is here to help!
To better serve the educator community and offer more comprehensive support services for early childhood educators and children, the CCRC and IECMH teams work together to provide Tiered support service to address challenging behaviors. Our IECMH behavior consultants work directly with teachers and individual children to support programs in managing and reducing challenging behavior, as well as supporting children's social emotional development. The behavior consultants offer developmental and classroom screenings; on-site behavior observations; goal setting and practice-based coaching, and resource and referral information for both infant/toddler and preschool classrooms. The Resource Room features a Lending Library to enhance your reading centers, lesson plan ideas and materials, new die cuts, laminating services, and a computer lab (internet access and printing available). Children’s books are organized by theme (5 to 6 books per theme) and can be checked out for a 2-week period. Find lesson plan ideas and books for your library!
Resource Room Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
- Entrance will not be permitted after 4:30 p.m.
- All educator patrons must be escorted into the Resource Room
- Educator patrons may not remain in the Resource Room after 5 p.m.

It’s Time to Register for Kindergarten
Registration for new students or students entering public school kindergarten in fall 2026 begins the week of March 2 in all Howard County public elementary schools. Kindergarten is mandatory in Maryland. State law requires that children entering kindergarten in the fall of 2025 must be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2026. Visit the enroll page www.hcpss.org/enroll/ to confirm the school which your child is districted to attend, understand the required documentation and begin the online registration process.
