Prop 68 Includes Funds for Communities with Local Funding Measures
Doyle GM pic update
Thank you California and Park District voters for passing Proposition 68 on the June 5th statewide ballot.

Because of your support $2.83 billion will be invested into parks statewide, including $40 million in competitive grants for communities that have passed local funding measures for parks.

A special thanks to Park District voters who voted 73% YES in Alameda County and 62% YES in Contra Costa County – both well above the 50% needed for passage.

See you in your Regional Parks!

Park District Gearing Up for Fire Season
This fire season, the East Bay Regional Park District has been busy with three Fire Hazard Reduction Crews and three goat herds working to thin and remove vegetation at 40 targeted sites in the East Bay Hills. Thinning and removing hazardous vegetation is critical to giving firefighters a fighting chance and preventing small fires from becoming large disasters.

Each year the Park District thins and removes hazardous vegetation on over 1,000 acres to reduce fire risks – much of that thanks to residents in western Alameda and Contra Costa counties who voted in 2004 to support regional park services with additional local funding. Learn More

The Special District Leadership Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization formed to promote good governance and best practices among California's special districts.

The District Transparency Certificate of Excellence program promotes transparency in operations and governance and provides special districts an opportunity to showcase their efforts in transparency.

Whitney Dotson Receives Bay Hero Award
On June 28 The Bay Institute honored East Bay Regional Park District Board Member and wetland advocate Whitney Dotson with their 2018 “Bay Hero” award for his lifelong work to improve shorelines and wetlands in the Bay Area, especially in underserved western Contra Costa County.

The Bay Institute called out Dotson’s advocacy and determination at the Point Pinole Regional Shoreline in Richmond, including his work to restore 150 acres of marshland habitat with balanced public access. Restoration of the Dotson Family Marsh, previously known as Breuner Marsh, was completed in 2017.

East Bay Regional Park District Board Member Ellen Corbett visits the new Native Plant Demonstration Garden at Crown Beach along with Naturalist Michael Charnofsky and EBMUD Water Conservation Representative Jolene Bertetto.
New Native Plant Garden at Crown Beach
The District opened a new native plant demonstration garden at Crown Beach in Alameda to highlight water conservation and how native plants are naturally drought tolerant and require little water once established. The demonstration garden was created by converting a water-thirsty lawn into a garden of native water-saving plants. The garden includes native perennials that provide color year-around, are low-maintenance, and support birds, butterflies, and bees. The project was partially funded by the East Bay Municipal Utility District through a $15,000 grant from their WaterSmart Garden Grant Program.

“The East Bay Regional Park District leads in the battle to protect our environment and fight climate change,” said East Bay Regional Park District Ward 4 Board Director Ellen Corbett. “The native plant demonstration garden at Crown Beach gives us another opportunity to share our innovation and provide examples to our neighbors on how they also can make a difference.”

The garden provides important information for park visitors on how to use native plants, conserve water, and provide for a more water-efficient home. Learn More
EBRPD Awarded Grant for Habitat Restoration at Bay Point Regional Shoreline
On _____ the San Joaquin Delta Conservancy awarded the East Bay Regional Park District $2.1 million for the Bay Point Habitat Restoration Project at Bay Point Regional Shoreline.

The Bay Point Habitat Restoration project will create more wetlands and upland grassland along the southern shoreline of Suisun Bay, which will provide long-term habitat value for native species with resilient upland habitat that will withstand sea level rise projections.

Bay Point Regional Shoreline consists of 150 acres of Bay-Delta open space and marshland in Contra Costa County at the approximate midpoint of the San Francisco Bay Estuary and the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta. Hiking, bird-watching, shoreline fishing, and nature study are just a few of the pastimes enjoyed by the public at this particular parkland.

Swim Safety
Water Safety Tips:
  • If you’re unsure of your swimming abilities, wear a life-jacket. Swim facilities have free loaner life-jackets available. It is recommended that all young children wear life-jackets.
  • Keep a close eye on your children. Drowning can occur quickly and silently, even in a foot of water.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol if you plan on swimming. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, coordination, and affects swimming abilities.
  • Only swim in areas with a lifeguard on duty.
  • It is recommended anyone on a boat, regardless of age, wear a life-jacket. By law, all boats must have life-jackets available for every person on board and those under age 16 are required to wear one at all times.
