Turf laden with fire ants delivered to Byron property from infested zone in South-East Qld
Authorities are investigating how a load of turf laden with fire ants was certified as treated and clear before being delivered to a property on the NSW north coast. The ants, including six queens, were found at Eureka in the Byron Shire, 53 kilometres from the Queensland border.
A reminder of how easy it is for incursions to happen, despite having stringent checks and restrictions in place. Also of the golden rules of biosecurity: be vigilant, inspect and monitor your trees and property. Constantly.

Australia and the United Arab Emirates have officially signed the Australia-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). When fully implemented, CEPA will eliminate tariffs on over 99% of Australia's goods exports to the United Arab Emirates. | |

A cute, vividly coloured native bee with a very distinctive buzz is the ABC's first Australian Insect of the Year. A total of 13,593 people voted in the inaugural ABC Insect of the Year poll. Just over 50.1 per cent (6,815 votes) chose the blue-banded bee (Amegilla cingulata) from a field of six insect finalists selected by an expert panel.
What a great way to get more people interested in our important critter friends.

AOA SA Back to Basics Field Day: Part of the NFF National Horticulture Roadshow | |

The Australian Olive Association has developed a “Back to Basics” Field Day with support from the National Farmers Federation, to provide key information for new olive growers and those thinking about becoming olive growers.
A particular focus of the day is on how grape growers can leverage their existing enterprise to grow olives, and also make the most of olive trees they may already have in their vineyard. However, the information is for anyone looking to enter the olive industry or manage a neglected grove.
Topics will include site selection, varieties, irrigation, grove management, pruning, pests and diseases and harvest options. Several industry equipment suppliers and service providers will also be on hand to show you what is available to make your grove as efficient as possible.
Presenters will include Michael Southan (AOA), Michael Thomsett (AOA), David Braunack (Two Sisters Wine Co), Leon Atsalis (Eclipse Enterprises), Jared Bettio (Mt Torrens Holdings).

New spectroscopy method shows promise for detecting olive oil fraud
Researchers from the University of Cordoba have validated a novel spectroscopy technique to help distinguish between extra virgin and virgin olive oils. This approach could support existing panel-based tests, which are often slow, costly, and subjective, by providing a faster, non-destructive screening option.
