Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development awards $1.7 million in Skills Development Funding to the Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training

The Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario (ECAO) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Skills Development Funding of $1.7 million from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. Ontario’s Skills Development Program bolsters ground-breaking training and development projects that upskill workers and prepare job seekers for meaningful work in their communities.

“We're excited to continue the momentum started with the first round of 150 Skilled Development Fund projects, all of which have proven tremendously successful in helping further build the skills of hundreds of thousands of workers and job seekers,” said Hon. Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “It's imperative for the health of our province that businesses thrive and continue to grow, and key to their success is having a talented, skilled workforce.”

Eligibility for this second round of funding was expanded to allow a wider range of organizations including Indigenous skills and employment training centres, social service administration boards and hospitals, among many others, to help provide more people with the training needed to fill the expected shortage of skilled workers in Ontario.

Course Description for Fourth Session

Overcoming Judgement

An important element of diversity is “open awareness”. Open awareness refers to a quality of consciousness that is not evaluative or actively shaped by pre-existing ideas or intentions, but is fully receptive to allowing the experience to simply occur “as it is”. In this workshop, open awareness is introduced by addressing the evaluative nature of the mind. While open awareness involves non-judgment, most of our daily awareness is clouded by countless judgments and evaluations. By becoming aware of these judgments, an important obstacle of open awareness is removed. In this workshop, participants experience the judgmental nature of their mind and learn about the problematic aspects of judgments.

We have a great line-up of speakers at the conference. On September 20th, join us to attend one of Europe’s most sought-after motivational and organizational speakers, trainers, and facilitators, David Meade. David will address how our “new normal” will be guided by the use of effective collaboration and partnerships within and across the construction industry. He will share his research on leadership and organizational structure with ECAO members, which they can take back to their company and help grow their business profits.

And on September 22nd, Steven Bratt, the Group Chief Executive Officer at the UK-based Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), will be speaking about the range of benefits European Electrical Contractors have experienced with off-site construction. These include improved health and safety outcomes, increased productivity, a smaller carbon footprint and reduced operational costs.

With the re-opening of global business travel in 2022, and the resuming of scheduled global events amid continued COVID-19 concerns, there are added demands on organizations for due diligence with regard to risk associated with travel. ECAO, with the help of third party, conducted a Travel Risk Assessment, to recognize, inform and reduce the risk. The Initial risk analysis was done in March, and it was updated in May. “Based on the Risk Assessment Matrix and evaluation of current risks presented by leading international travel risk experts, governments, and COVID tracking sources, it remains the recommendation of this study that the ECAO proceed with plans to host the Annual Industry Conference in Prague, September 17-24, 2022.”

ECAO 2022 Scholarships

It is that time of year again when we are reaching out to offer scholarships to post-secondary graduates for children or wards of salaried employees of ECAO Member Companies.

The scholarship was launched in 2004 and awards 5 successful recipients with a scholarship of $5,000 each. In 2021 the ECAO Executive approved the increase to $5,000 in recognition of the cost of living increases especially for kids in school.

The scholarship will be awarded to outstanding students enrolling in a course leading to a University degree or Community College diploma. The award will be based on academic achievement in the previous academic year however; academic achievement will not be the sole basis of review. Extracurricular activity, work experience, employment, application and supporting material, handwritten submission and course of study will also be an important aspect of selection. Preference will be given to those showing interest in the construction industry.

The deadline for submission is currently June 30th but this may be adjusted based on students ability to receive their academic records for 2021/2022.

Forecast Summary Reports

Every year, BuildForce Canada generates Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward highlights reports for each province and for Canada’s territories. In an effort to provide the construction industry with an outlook more focused on immediate labour force challenges, BuildForce has shortened the outlook window from a 10-year to a six-year outlook period. These reports help decision makers anticipate labour force requirements and identify the trades and occupations the industry is most likely to need across a six-year forecast scenario.

The BuildForce Canada 2022-2027 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward reports and analyses incorporate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry as of the fall of 2021.
