Is Your Child Struggling to Hear? What Every Parent Should Know

Ear infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses, especially for children ages 6 months to 2 years old. In fact, many children will have at least one ear infection by age 2. These infections can cause mild to moderate hearing problems that may change from day to day.

When children have trouble hearing, it can affect more than just their ears. They might:

  • Seem like they aren’t paying attention
  • Have trouble following directions
  • Need things repeated often
  • Have speech or language delays
  • Struggle with learning or friendships
  • Pull or rub at their ears

Hearing problems can slow down speech, learning, memory, and social skills if they are not treated. The good news is that early screening and support can make a big difference.

If you are concerned about your child’s speech, language, or behavior, ask if they’ve had a recent hearing screening. Early action helps children stay on track with their development.

Choose Words that Build Relationships

"The words you choose and how you use them either facilitate positive, effective relationships with children and families or impede those relationships. As early care and education professionals, it is our responsibility to express an interest in families and children. We need to acknowledge children and families' strengths and the ways in which they are effective...We need to accept the presumptions that all people are basically good, and families want what is best for their children. Upon those presumptions we can build a relationship, the very foundation of which is communication.”

"The respect we communicate through our words helps us model what we expect from children; this affects all areas of their development. When we are going to wipe a very young child’s nose, saying, ‘I am going to wipe your nose now’ shows respect. Asking a preschool child if he needs help as he struggles to zip up his coat shows respect. If we jump right into helper mode without those words, we may be impeding progress and disempowering the child..."-Laura Mickley

"The power of words can either build bridges or burn them down, so choose them wisely."– Kirby Larson

Recently, the singer Lady Gaga decided to record the classic song made famous by Fred Rogers, "Won't You Be My Neighbor," to encourage kindness and mutual support.

Early Childhood Mental Health

How do we know if a child feels safe? Many of our ideas around children’s safety are our perceptions of their safety and what we think their environments need to be. As educators, we often feel like if we stop kids from hitting each other and provide safe spaces that control children’s movements, then they should feel safe in the classroom.

The problem with this is that it isn’t about what we think makes children feel safe, but it’s the children’s perceptions of being safe.

For children having challenging behaviors, we often use approaches that we think will work, but they don’t. We focus on providing an environment that we think promotes safety, but we don’t focus on what the child actually needs to feel safe. This is where individualized and child-led perceptions of environmental and relational safety come into play.

Relationships are key!!! Providing a child with relationships in which the child feels are safe will support co-regulation, supports for the child’s stress responses, and supports during challenging behaviors. But simply having a qualified adult there is not enough.

Family Affordability Tax Credit Reminder

It's tax time! Many residents of Colorado are eligible for thousands of dollars in tax credits, including the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). However, nearly a quarter of those eligible miss out on these benefits. You don't need to earn a high income to qualify for the CTC or EITC, but it is necessary to file a state of Colorado tax return for this credit. Starting in 2025, Colorado families with children will be able to access the Family Affordability Tax Credit (FATC).

Here’s how it works:

  • Up to $3,200 for each eligible child aged 5 years old and younger as of Dec 31, 2025
  • Up to $2,400 for each eligible child ages 6 to 16 as of Dec 31, 2025

Additionally, parents with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) can qualify for the credit if their children have a Social Security Number (SSN), which can also be up to $3,200 per young child. To receive this credit, you must file a State of Colorado tax return. File your taxes securely and for free at https://www.getaheadcolorado.org/
